AppleSkin Guide: Debug Screen Food Stats, HUD Overlays, and Flash Settings
AppleSkin is a client-side utility mod that adds detailed food-related information to Minecraft’s interface. Its features are controlled through a settings menu and hotkeys, not through crafting or in-game items. This guide explains how to view precise hunger, saturation, and exhaustion values in the Debug Screen, and how to adjust the animation and flashing behavior of the HUD overlays.
Viewing Detailed Food Stats in the Debug Screen
The mod can display your exact hunger, saturation, and exhaustion levels directly on the Debug Screen (the F3 overlay). This is separate from the default Minecraft information and gives you numeric precision.
- Open the Debug Screen using its standard key (F3).
- Look for the AppleSkin section, which lists the three values as numbers.
- This feature is controlled by the setting showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay. When enabled, the values appear; when disabled, they are hidden.
To change this setting, open the mod’s configuration menu (via the corresponding hotkey, set it in the controls menu) and toggle the showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay option.
Understanding the HUD Overlays
Beyond the Debug Screen, AppleSkin can draw several overlays directly on the hunger and health bars. These overlays show what would happen if you ate the food you are currently holding in your main hand or off-hand.
- showFoodValuesHudOverlay — When enabled, the hunger bar shows a translucent overlay indicating how much hunger the held food would restore.
- showSaturationHudOverlay — When enabled, a separate overlay on the hunger bar displays your current saturation level.
- showFoodHealthHudOverlay — When enabled, a similar overlay appears on the health bar, estimating how much health the held food would restore.
- showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay — When enabled, a progress bar appears behind the hunger bar, showing your current exhaustion level. This helps you predict when you will become hungry again.
- showFoodValuesHudOverlayWhenOffhand — When enabled, all the above overlays also apply to food held in your off-hand.
Each of these overlays is toggled independently. Use the mod’s settings menu to turn them on or off according to your preference.
Tooltip Options for Food Items
AppleSkin also enhances the tooltips (the text box that appears when you hover over an item) for food items.
- showFoodValuesInTooltip — When enabled, the food item’s tooltip always shows the hunger and saturation values it provides, without needing to hold any key.
- showFoodValuesInTooltipAlways — This is a separate toggle. When enabled, the values are shown while you hold the SHIFT key. If both this and the previous option are off, no values appear in the tooltip.
These two settings work together: you can choose to always see the values, only see them with SHIFT, or never see them.
Animation and Flash Settings
The HUD overlays can animate to match Minecraft’s own icon animations, and they can flash to draw your attention. These behaviors are adjustable.
- showVanillaAnimationsOverlay — When enabled, the health and hunger overlays shake or pulse in sync with Minecraft’s standard icon animations. Disable this if you prefer static overlays.
- maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha — This setting controls the maximum opacity of the flashing icons. The value ranges from 0.0 (fully transparent, effectively no flash) to 1.0 (fully opaque at the peak of the flash). Set it lower to make the flashing subtler, or higher for a more prominent effect.
Adjust these settings in the same configuration menu. The flash alpha is a numeric value, so you can fine-tune it precisely.
Summary of Operation
All features are accessed through the mod’s settings interface, which you open using its assigned hotkey. There are no crafting recipes or items to obtain. Simply configure the toggles to your liking, then test the overlays by holding a piece of food in your hand. The Debug Screen will reflect your changes immediately when you open it. Remember to set your preferred hotkey for the settings menu in the game’s controls menu before using the mod.
