Reading Food Stats in AppleSkin: Tooltip and HUD Options
AppleSkin is a utility mod that adds food-related information to your Minecraft interface, letting you see hunger and saturation details on food items and on your own status bars. This guide explains how to display those values in item tooltips, either permanently or only while holding SHIFT, plus the related HUD overlays.
Showing Food Values in Item Tooltips
The core feature for checking food items is controlled by two settings in the mod's configuration menu.
- Show food values in tooltip (setting name: `showFoodValuesInTooltip`) — When enabled, any food item you hover over will display its hunger and saturation numbers directly in the tooltip, with no extra input needed. This is the "always visible" mode.
- Always show food values in tooltip (setting name: `showFoodValuesInTooltipAlways`) — This setting changes the behavior of the first option. When this is turned on, the tooltip values appear without needing to hold any key. When turned off, the tooltip values only appear while you are holding the SHIFT key. In other words, this toggle decides whether the food stats are permanently visible or require a key press.
To operate these: open the AppleSkin configuration screen (accessible through the mod's controls or settings menu), find the two options above, and flip them according to your preference. There is no default key to mention here — the SHIFT requirement is only relevant if the "Always" option is disabled.
HUD Overlays for Held Food
Beyond tooltips, AppleSkin can show what a food item will do to your bars before you eat it.
- Show hunger restored from held food (setting name: `showFoodValuesHudOverlay`) — With this enabled, holding a food item in your main hand will display an overlay on your hunger bar indicating how much hunger that item would restore.
- Show overlays for food in off-hand (setting name: `showFoodValuesHudOverlayWhenOffhand`) — This extends the same overlay effect to food held in your off-hand slot.
- Show estimated health overlay (setting name: `showFoodHealthHudOverlay`) — When active, holding food also shows a translucent overlay on your health bar, estimating how much health the food would recover.
Status Bar Overlays for Your Current State
These options show your current food-related stats directly on the HUD, independent of what you are holding.
- Show saturation overlay (setting name: `showSaturationHudOverlay`) — Displays your current saturation level as an extra layer on top of the hunger bar.
- Show exhaustion underlay (setting name: `showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay`) — Adds a progress bar behind the hunger bar that fills as your exhaustion increases.
- Show food values in Debug Screen (setting name: `showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay`) — When enabled, pressing F3 (the debug screen) will include your exact hunger, saturation, and exhaustion numbers in the debug text.
Visual Behavior Options
Two settings affect how the overlays look and animate.
- Animate HUD icons to match Minecraft (setting name: `showVanillaAnimationsOverlay`) — If on, the health and hunger overlays will shake or pulse in sync with the vanilla icon animations.
- Max alpha of flashing HUD icons (setting name: `maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha`) — This slider controls the peak opacity of any flashing overlay icons. A value of 1.0 makes them fully opaque at their brightest moment; 0.0 makes them completely invisible. Adjust this to make the flashes more or less noticeable.
To use any of these features, locate the AppleSkin configuration menu, toggle the relevant settings, and test them in-game. The corresponding hotkey for opening the configuration screen is set in the controls menu — no specific key is assigned by default in the facts provided.
