AppleSkin Guide: Turning On and Off Its Core Food and HUD Features

guide

This guide explains how to use AppleSkin’s interface and hotkeys to enable or disable its core features, which add food-related information to tooltips and the HUD.

Accessing the Settings

AppleSkin’s options are managed through its configuration interface, not through crafting. To change any setting, open the mod’s configuration screen. From there, you will see a list of toggles, each with a checkbox or switch. The primary master switch is labeled appleskin. When this is turned off, all other food-related HUD improvements are disabled. Turn it on to make the rest of the settings available.

Tooltip Features

These settings control what information appears when you hover over a food item in your inventory.

  • showFoodValuesInTooltip: When enabled, the hunger and saturation values of the food are shown in its tooltip automatically, without needing to hold the SHIFT key.
  • showFoodValuesInTooltipAlways: When enabled, the hunger and saturation values appear in the tooltip only while you are holding SHIFT. If both this and the previous option are off, no food values are shown in the tooltip.

HUD Overlay Features

These settings control what appears on your health and hunger bars while you are holding food.

  • showFoodValuesHudOverlay: This controls the overlay that shows how much hunger (and saturation, if showSaturationHudOverlay is also on) would be restored by the food you are currently holding in your main hand.
  • showFoodValuesHudOverlayWhenOffhand: When enabled, the same hunger, saturation, and health overlays are also shown for food held in your off-hand.
  • showFoodHealthHudOverlay: When enabled, an estimated health overlay appears on the health bar, showing how much health the held food would restore.
  • showSaturationHudOverlay: When enabled, your current saturation level is shown as an overlay on the hunger bar.
  • showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay: When enabled, your food exhaustion is displayed as a progress bar behind the hunger bar.
  • showVanillaAnimationsOverlay: When enabled, the health and hunger overlays will shake and animate to match Minecraft’s own icon animations. If you prefer a static overlay, turn this off.

Debug Screen Feature

  • showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay: When enabled, your current hunger, saturation, and exhaustion levels are displayed in the Debug Screen (the F3 screen). This is useful for precise tracking.

Adjusting Visual Intensity

  • maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha: This setting controls the maximum opacity of the flashing HUD icons. The value is a decimal between 0.0 and 1.0. A value of 1.0 makes the icons fully opaque at their most visible point, while 0.0 makes them fully transparent. Adjust this slider to make the flashing icons more or less noticeable.

Operating the Features

To use AppleSkin, simply hold a food item in your hand. The overlays on your hunger and health bars will appear automatically, provided the relevant toggles are enabled. To view tooltip values, hover over the food item in your inventory. To change any of these behaviors, open the configuration screen and toggle the settings as described above. There are no crafting recipes or in-game items to create—everything is controlled through the mod’s interface and its associated hotkeys, which you can assign in the controls menu.
