Configuring AppleSkin’s HUD Overlays and Food Tooltips
Overview
This guide explains how to configure the AppleSkin mod’s food-related HUD overlays and tooltips. All options are toggled through the mod’s settings menu, not through crafting or in-game items. Each setting is listed below with its exact name and a plain description of what it does.
Tooltip Settings
showFoodValuesInTooltip — When enabled, the tooltip for any food item shows the hunger and saturation values it provides. This works automatically, with no need to hold a modifier key.
showFoodValuesInTooltipAlways — When enabled, the food tooltip continues to display hunger and saturation values even while you are holding the SHIFT key. If this is off, holding SHIFT may hide or alter that information.
HUD Overlay Settings
showFoodValuesHudOverlay — When enabled, the HUD shows how much hunger (and saturation, if that overlay is also on) would be restored by the food you are currently holding in your main hand.
showFoodValuesHudOverlayWhenOffhand — When enabled, the same hunger and saturation preview overlays apply to food held in your off-hand. This lets you see the effect of off-hand food without switching hands.
showFoodHealthHudOverlay — When enabled, the health bar displays an estimated overlay showing how much health would be restored by the food you are holding. This estimate appears on the health icons themselves.
showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay — When enabled, a progress bar appears behind the hunger bar showing your current food exhaustion level. This underlay fills as exhaustion accumulates.
showSaturationHudOverlay — When enabled, your current saturation level is drawn as an overlay directly on top of the hunger bar. This makes it easy to see how much saturation you have left at a glance.
showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay — When enabled, the Debug Screen (F3) includes your exact hunger, saturation, and exhaustion values. This is useful for precise testing or troubleshooting.
showVanillaAnimationsOverlay — When enabled, the health and hunger overlays shake and animate in sync with Minecraft’s own icon animations. Turn this off if you prefer a static, stable overlay.
maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha — This slider controls the maximum opacity of the flashing HUD icons. A value of 1.0 makes them fully opaque at their brightest point; a value of 0.0 makes them fully transparent. Adjust this to reduce visual distraction.
Operating the Settings
To change any of these options, open the mod’s configuration screen. You can do this through the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu). From there, toggle each setting by clicking its checkbox or adjusting the slider for maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha.
There is no single “master switch” for all overlays; each feature is independent. For example, you can enable the off-hand overlay without enabling the main-hand overlay, or show exhaustion underlay while hiding the saturation overlay.
Practical Tips
- If you want to see the full nutritional impact of any food before eating it, enable showFoodValuesInTooltip and showFoodValuesHudOverlay.
- To monitor your long-term food economy, keep showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay on; it helps you predict when your hunger will start dropping.
- For a cleaner HUD, set maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha to a lower value or disable showVanillaAnimationsOverlay.
- Use showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay when you need exact numbers for testing or comparing foods.
All settings take effect immediately after you change them. There is no need to restart the game.
