Tapping Trees for Sap and Latex in ArborFirmaCraft and Boiling Them Into Syrup and Rubber
Certain trees in ArborFirmaCraft yield fluids that are worth collecting. Maple and Birch trees give sugary sap by default. Rubber Figs and Hevea give latex. Sap becomes syrup, which works as a sweetener, and latex becomes rubber.
What You Need to Tap a Tree
Three things must be in place before a tree will give you anything.
- The tree itself, of a type that produces sap or latex.
- A tree tap, forged from wrought iron and set into the middle of a trunk that is at least three blocks tall.
- A barrel, positioned right under the tap and pointed upward.
When everything is set up correctly, the barrel starts filling with sap right away.
When Trees Produce
Trees do not give fluid at all times. Maple and Birch trees produce sap during spring, within a temperature range of -4°C to 6°C. This is roughly the period when snow starts melting. Hevea trees give latex only while the temperature sits above 22°C. Rubber Figs give latex at 12°C and higher, though they flow more slowly than Hevea.
Temperature is not fixed. Latitude, altitude, the time of year, and the time of day all change it, and that in turn changes how sap flows.
Turning Sap Into Syrup
Sap on its own is not yet useful. It has to be concentrated. Boil the sap in a pot, then boil the result a second time. The first boil gives you a sap concentrate, and the second gives you syrup.
One detail matters here: the pot will not boil unless you stir it. Put a stick in an input slot to stir.
Syrup stored in a jug can be crafted into a solid sugar for baking.
Yields are low. Every 50 buckets of maple sap gives one bucket of syrup. Birch sap is even less efficient, needing 100 buckets for the same single bucket of syrup. If you want a meaningful amount of syrup, run several pots boiling at once.
Turning Latex Into Rubber
Latex is processed differently. Boil latex in a pot together with powdered sulfur, and solid rubber forms.
