The core progression items and machines for beginning your dinosaur journey in Not Enough Dinosaurs start with a single fossil and build toward a full set of crafting recipes. Each step unlocks the next, so gathering the right materials early saves time later.
Starting With the Paleo Book
Your first goal is the 
Paleo Book (Work in progress). It is made with a shapeless recipe, meaning the ingredients can sit anywhere in the crafting grid. Combine a 
Book with an 
Oviraptor Fossil to produce it. Because the recipe is shapeless, you do not need to worry about arranging the two items in a specific pattern.
Building the Computer And Processors
The 
Computer And Processors is the foundation for the more advanced machines. It uses a shaped recipe, so placement matters. The ingredients are:
Iron Ingot x2
Glass Pane
Blue Dye x2
Prehistoric Gem
Stone Button x2
Redstone Dust
Once assembled, the Computer And Processors becomes a required component in two separate machine recipes, so it is worth crafting more than one if you plan to build both.
Crafting the Dna Extractor
The 
Dna Extractor is a shaped recipe that consumes a Computer And Processors along with other materials. Its full ingredient list is:

Note that this recipe also calls for Blue Dye and a Glass Pane, the same two materials used in the Computer And Processors. Stocking up on both early keeps you from running back and forth.
Crafting the Embryonic Machine

Embryonic Machine is another shaped recipe that depends on a Computer And Processors. Its ingredients are:
