Opening the Better Block Entities Interface and Setting Up Its Master Toggle and Shading Options
Better Block Entities (BBE) is a performance mod for Minecraft that replaces the rendering of common block entities with faster versions, and this guide covers how to reach its settings screen, how its master switch works, and how to pick between the Sodium and vanilla shading methods.
Opening the BBE Interface
BBE is configured entirely through its own on-screen interface rather than through any in-game crafting or item. Open that interface using the corresponding hotkey, which you assign yourself in the controls menu. There is no fixed default key documented here, so set whichever binding is comfortable before you begin.
Once the interface is open, you will see the mod's options laid out as toggles and selectors, each with a tooltip explaining what it does. Hover over any entry to read its description.
The Master Toggle
The master toggle is the single switch that controls BBE as a whole. Flipping it turns the mod and every optimization it provides on or off at once.
- Turn it off to return all block entities to their unmodified rendering behaviour.
- Turn it on to let BBE apply its optimizations across the board.
Because this one control governs everything, use it whenever you want to compare performance or rule out BBE as the cause of a visual problem. Individual per-block toggles still exist for chests, shulker boxes, signs, decorated pots, banners, bells, beds, campfires, and lecterns, plus separate animation toggles for chests, shulker boxes, bells, and decorated pots, but the master toggle sits above all of them.
Choosing a Shading Method
The shading option determines how lighting is calculated on block entities that BBE has optimized. Two choices are available.
- Sodium shading computes ambient occlusion and lightmaps at each corner rather than across each whole face. This generally produces a smoother, more attractive result.
- Vanilla shading uses the standard approach.
The trade-off to be aware of: because Sodium's method differs from vanilla's, you may notice a visible discrepancy at the moment a block entity switches between vanilla rendering and Sodium rendering. If that transition looks jarring to you, vanilla shading keeps things consistent.
Pick the method that suits your priorities. Choose Sodium shading if you want the better-looking lighting and do not mind the transition difference. Choose vanilla shading if visual consistency during those transitions matters more.
Related Options Worth Knowing
Several other settings sit alongside the master toggle and shading choice, and they follow the same pattern of a labelled control with an explanatory tooltip.
- Banner render pass decides which render pass banners use: Fast corresponds to cutout, and Fancy corresponds to translucent.
- Extra Render Passes sets how many additional passes a block entity stays in its animating state after its animation has finished.
- Update scheduler chooses between Smart, which updates block entities based on factors such as visibility and performs no direct updates, and Fast, which updates immediately.
- Sign text rendering can be switched on or off, with a separate Sign Text Render Distance controlling the distance in blocks at which sign text begins to appear.
- Sign text backface culling skips drawing sign text on whichever side is not currently visible.
- Christmas textures for chests can be enabled or disabled.
- Banner canvas rotation moves the banner canvas or flag to a preset position.
Each of these is independent of the master toggle, so you can fine-tune behaviour after deciding whether BBE is active and which shading method you prefer.
