Controlling Sign Text Distance, Backface Culling, Banner Render Pass, and Christmas Chest Textures in Better Block Entities

guide

Better Block Entities (BBE) gives you direct control over how several block entities are drawn and animated, including sign text range, banner rendering, and seasonal chest textures. Everything below is handled through the mod's interface and the corresponding hotkeys, which you assign yourself in the controls menu.

Master Toggle and Shading

The tooltip labeled option is the main switch: it turns BBE and every optimization it provides on or off at once. If something looks wrong, this is the first thing to check.

A separate setting lets you pick the shading method used for BBE-optimized block entities. Sodium is one choice, and it can look better because it calculates ambient occlusion and lightmaps per corner rather than per face. The tradeoff is that you may notice a clear visual difference while block entities switch between vanilla rendering and Sodium rendering.

Per-Block Optimizations

Each of these toggles the optimization for one block type on or off:

  • Optimize Chest
  • Optimize Shulker Box
  • Optimize Sign
  • Optimize Decorated Pot
  • Optimize Banner
  • Optimize Bell
  • Optimize Bed
  • Optimize Campfire
  • Optimize Lectern

Per-Block Animations

Animation toggles work the same way, one block type at a time:

  • Animate Chest
  • Animate Shulker Box
  • Animate Bell
  • Animate Decorated Pot

Sign Settings

Three options control signs specifically.

Sign Text toggles whether sign text is drawn at all.

Sign Text Render Distance sets the number of blocks at which sign text begins to appear. Text will not render until you are within that range.

Sign Text Backface Culling skips drawing sign text on the face you cannot see. Turning this on reduces work by ignoring the hidden side.

Banner Render Pass decides which render pass banners use. Fast corresponds to cutout, and Fancy corresponds to translucent.

A separate option rotates the banner canvas or flag to a preset position.

Chest Textures

Christmas Chests toggles the Christmas textures for chests on or off. Use it to enable or disable the seasonal appearance.

Render Passes and Update Scheduling

Extra Render Passes decides how many additional render passes a block entity stays in its animating state after the animation has finished. Raising this keeps animation frames alive longer; lowering it ends them sooner.

The update scheduler setting chooses how block entities are refreshed. Smart updates them based on several factors, including visibility, and does not use direct updates. Fast updates them immediately.

Practical Notes

  • The tooltip master switch overrides everything else, so per-block toggles only matter while it is on.
  • If banners look wrong, try switching Banner Render Pass between Fast and Fancy before changing anything else.
  • If sign text appears too close or too far, adjust Sign Text Render Distance rather than the sign optimization toggle.
  • Leave Sign Text Backface Culling on unless you have a specific reason to render hidden faces.
  • If animations linger or cut off abruptly, tune Extra Render Passes.
  • Choose Smart scheduling when you want updates tied to visibility, and Fast when you want immediate updates.
  • Set your own keys for any of these actions in the controls menu; no default key is assumed here.
