BetterEnd Structure Guide: End Villages, Eternal Portals, Giant Ice Stars and More

guide

BetterEnd structure locations are governed by biome tags and spacing rules, so knowing where each one generates saves a lot of aimless flying. This guide covers the placement of End Villages, Eternal Portals, Giant Ice Stars, Giant Mossy Glowshrooms, Megalakes and Mountains in the mod's custom End generator.

How Structure Placement Works

Every BetterEnd structure is tied to a biome tag that decides which biomes it can appear in. On top of that, each structure has a placement rule with two parts: an attempt region measured in chunks, and a minimum distance between structures, also measured in chunks. The attempt region means the game makes one placement attempt per that many chunks; the minimum distance keeps two instances of the same structure from crowding each other. A smaller attempt region means attempts happen more often, and a smaller minimum distance means structures can sit closer together.

End Village

End Villages generate in biomes tagged `#betterend:has_structure/end_village`. Placement is one attempt per 34x34 chunk region, with structures at least 8 chunks apart. The wide attempt region makes these relatively uncommon, so expect to cover some ground between them.

Eternal Portal

Eternal Portals generate in biomes tagged `#betterend:has_structure/eternal_portal`. Placement is one attempt per 40x40 chunk region, at least 12 chunks apart. This is the largest attempt region of the structures listed here, and the 12-chunk minimum separation is also the largest, so Eternal Portals are the most spread-out of the group.

Giant Ice Star

Giant Ice Stars generate in biomes tagged `#betterend:has_structure/giant_ice_star`. Placement is one attempt per 16x16 chunk region, at least 8 chunks apart.

Giant Mossy Glowshroom

Giant Mossy Glowshrooms generate in biomes tagged `#betterend:has_structure/giant_mossy_glowshroom`. Placement is one attempt per 16x16 chunk region, at least 8 chunks apart. This matches the Giant Ice Star spacing exactly, so both share the same frequency and separation.

Megalake

Megalakes generate in biomes tagged `#betterend:has_structure/megalake`. Placement is one attempt per 4x4 chunk region, at least 1 chunk apart. The tiny attempt region and 1-chunk minimum mean these are by far the most common structure in this list.

Mountain

Mountains generate in biomes tagged `#betterend:has_structure/mountain`. Placement is one attempt per 3x3 chunk region, at least 2 chunks apart. Like Megalakes, these use a very small attempt region, so they appear frequently.

Reading the Numbers

The pattern is straightforward once you compare the attempt regions. Mountains and Megalakes use 3x3 and 4x4 chunk regions respectively, so placement attempts are frequent. Giant Ice Stars and Giant Mossy Glowshrooms sit in the middle at 16x16. End Villages at 34x34 and Eternal Portals at 40x40 are the rarest of the set, with Eternal Portals also enforcing the widest gap at 12 chunks.

Practical Notes

Because each structure is bound to a biome tag, the biome you are standing in determines which structures are even possible there. If a structure is not appearing, the biome may simply not carry the matching tag. The minimum distance rule also means that once you find one instance of a structure, another of the same type will not be nearby — you need to travel beyond the separation distance before another can generate. BetterEnd's custom End generator shapes islands at varying heights and includes caves, so terrain can affect how a structure sits in the landscape even though the placement rules themselves are chunk-based.
