Reading BetterF3’s Extra Debug Data: Chunk Light, Graphs, Ping, and Profiler

guide

BetterF3 replaces the standard Minecraft debug screen with a customizable overlay that can show extra technical details such as chunk light levels, FPS/TPS graphs, ping, and the profiler. This guide explains how to open the mod’s options, enable those specific data types, and understand what each toggle does.

Opening the Mod’s Options

To access BetterF3’s settings, use the key combination F3 + M. This opens the configuration interface where you can turn modules on or off and adjust their appearance. If you ever want to return to the original Minecraft debug HUD, look for the tooltip option that disables the mod entirely; enabling it makes the vanilla F3 screen appear again.

Enabling Extra Debug Data

Several data modules are not shown by default. You must activate them in the options menu.

  • chunklight — This module displays three numbers for the block you are looking at: Total, Sky, and Block light levels. Useful for checking if an area is dark enough for mobs to spawn.
  • always enable profiler — Toggles the profiler (the pie chart that shows where the game spends time) to run whenever you press F3. Without this, you may need to use the vanilla Pie Graph (Shift+F3) shortcut to view it.
  • always enable tps graph — Forces the TPS (ticks per second) graph to appear with F3. The tooltip warns that this cannot be active at the same time as the ping graph.
  • always enable ping graph — Forces the ping graph to show with F3. Like the TPS graph, it cannot run simultaneously with the other graph option.
  • FPS / TPS (Alt+F3) — This is a dedicated line that shows both frames per second and ticks per second together. It is separate from the always-on graph toggles.
  • Ping / Bandwidth (F3+3) — Displays your network latency and bandwidth usage. This is a distinct module from the ping graph.

Understanding Graph Conflicts

The TPS and ping graphs share the same screen space. If you enable both via their “always” toggles, the mod will not allow it. Choose one based on what you need: TPS for server performance, ping for connection quality. The tooltip for each explicitly states this mutual exclusion.

Customizing Visuals and Behavior

Beyond enabling data, the options menu lets you tweak how the HUD looks and acts.

  • tooltip — Automatically starts the debug menu when the game launches. Use this if you always want the overlay on.
  • tooltip — Adds a space after each module, making lines easier to read.
  • tooltip — Gives all characters a shadow effect for better contrast.
  • tooltip — Adds an opening and closing animation to the F3 HUD. A separate tooltip sets the speed of that animation.
  • Hide the Debug Crosshair — Removes the crosshair that normally appears with F3. Its tooltip also mentions hiding the sidebar and bossbar when the F3 menu is open.
  • Memory Color Toggle — Changes the memory value’s text color based on how much RAM is used. Low, medium, and high usage each get a different color.
  • tooltip — Sets the format for the system time display.

Color and Layout Controls

Many modules have independent color settings. You can change the color of the line’s name, its value, and even the X, Y, or Z coordinates separately. FPS text can have distinct colors for high, medium, or low frame rates. Chunk-related text has separate colors for when chunk options are on or off, plus specific colors for total chunks and total entities. Similar color toggles exist for help text, sound limits, and the background (using ARGB values). Each module also has an enable toggle and a setting for the number of blank lines to insert after it.

Other Useful Data Lines

The overlay can show many other values, including Simulation Distance, Pending Uploads to GPU, Client Chunk Cache, Loaded Chunks (Server), Forceloaded Chunks, Horizontal Velocity, Underground Water Creatures, Biome Blend Radius, Highest Block (Server), Tick Manager Status, and directional indicators (Towards negative/positive Z and X). If a chunk is still loading, it will display Waiting for chunk.... A Another Blank Line option adds extra empty space for readability.

To operate any feature, open the options with F3 + M, find the module you want, and toggle it on. Set hotkeys for quick access in the controls menu if needed.
