Opening BetterF3 Options

BetterF3 replaces the standard Minecraft debug screen with a customizable HUD. To open the mod’s options menu, press F3 + M. This action is the primary way to access all settings described below.

Toggling the Mod

To disable BetterF3 entirely and return to the vanilla F3 HUD, use the tooltip option. When enabled, this setting turns off the mod’s interface, restoring the original debug screen. Re-enable the option to bring BetterF3 back.

Basic Controls

  • F3 + Q – This opens the help overlay, which lists available debug shortcuts.
  • F3 + M – Opens the BetterF3 options menu.
  • F3 + F – Cycles the render distance. Hold Shift while pressing to invert the direction.
  • F3 + F + Ctrl – Cycles the simulation distance. Hold Shift to invert.
  • Alt + F3 – Displays the FPS / TPS graph.
  • Shift + F3 – Shows the pie graph.
  • F3 + 3 – Displays ping and bandwidth information.

Interface and Display Options

The options menu contains several toggles that affect how the HUD appears:

  • Automatically starts the debug menu – Makes the F3 HUD open immediately when the game launches.
  • Adds a space after each module – Inserts blank separation between different information groups.
  • Makes all characters have a shadow effect – Adds text shadows for readability.
  • Add an animation when closing and opening the F3 HUD – Enables smooth transitions. A separate slider sets the speed of this animation.
  • Hide the debug crosshair – Removes the center crosshair while the F3 HUD is open.
  • Hide the sidebar – Suppresses the right-side scoreboard when the F3 menu is active.
  • Hide the bossbar – Removes boss health bars while the F3 menu is open.
  • Always enable the profiler – Forces the profiler to run whenever F3 is used.
  • Always enable the TPS graph – Shows the ticks-per-second graph by default. This cannot be used together with the ping graph.
  • Always enable the ping graph – Displays network latency graph by default. This cannot be used with the TPS graph.
  • Memory color toggle – Changes the memory value’s color based on the percentage of memory currently used.

Customization Settings

You can adjust visual and formatting details:

  • Set the scale of the font – Controls overall text size.
  • Change the color of the name of every line – Alters the label text color for all entries.
  • Change the color of the value of every line – Alters the data text color.
  • Change the color of the X, Y, or Z coordinate – Each axis can have its own color.
  • FPS color thresholds – Set separate colors for high, medium, and low FPS values.
  • Chunk option colors – Define colors for when chunk settings are enabled or disabled.
  • Total chunks and entities – Customize colors for these counters.
  • Help option colors – Set colors for when help text is shown or hidden.
  • Maximum sounds – Change the color for the sound limit display.
  • Background color – Adjust the background of every line using ARGB values.
  • Set the format of the system time – Controls how the clock appears.
  • Enables this module – Turns individual information modules on or off.
  • The number of empty lines to display – Adds blank rows between sections.

Information Modules

The HUD can show many data points, including:

  • chunklight – Displays Total, Sky, and Block light levels.
  • Simulation Distance
  • Pending Uploads to GPU
  • Client Chunk Cache
  • Loaded Chunks (Server)
  • Forceloaded Chunks
  • Horizontal Velocity
  • Underground Water Creatures

  • Highest Block (Server)
  • Tick Manager Status
  • Direction indicators (Towards negative/positive Z and X)
  • Waiting for chunk... – Shown while data is being loaded.

Use the tooltip option to enable or disable any module, then adjust its colors and spacing as needed.
