BetterNether Structure Locations and Contents Guide
BetterNether's generated structures appear across the Nether in fixed region patterns, and knowing where each one spawns helps you plan a search. This guide covers the six structures the mod places and the spacing rules that govern them.
How Structure Placement Works
Each structure uses a region-based placement system. The game divides the world into square regions measured in chunks, then makes one attempt per region to place that structure. A minimum distance rule also applies, so two instances of the same structure cannot sit too close together. Because placement is an attempt rather than a guarantee, some regions will contain nothing.
The biome tags listed for each structure determine where it is allowed to generate. If a region overlaps suitable biomes, the structure has a chance to appear there.
Altars
Altars generate in biomes tagged `#betternether:has_structure/nether_decorations`. Placement uses one attempt per 40x40 chunk region, with at least 16 chunks between instances.
Gardens
Gardens share the same biome tag as altars: `#betternether:has_structure/nether_decorations`. Their regions are slightly larger, with one attempt per 50x50 chunk region, and the minimum spacing is 16 chunks.
Because altars and gardens draw from the same biome tag, you can find both while exploring the same areas of the Nether. Their different region sizes mean the two structures will not line up in a predictable pattern.
Ghast Hive
Ghast Hives generate in biomes tagged `#betternether:has_structure/ghast_hive`. This is the rarest structure in terms of spacing: one attempt per 80x80 chunk region, with at least 32 chunks between hives.
The large region and wide minimum distance make ghast hives a long-range target. Expect to cover a lot of ground before finding one.
Jungle Temples
Jungle Temples generate in biomes tagged `#betternether:has_structure/jungle_temples`. They use one attempt per 32x32 chunk region, with at least 8 chunks between temples.
This is the smallest region size of any structure listed here, and the minimum spacing is also the tightest. Jungle temples are therefore the most densely placed structure in the mod's set.
Nether City
Nether Cities generate in biomes tagged `#betternether:has_structure/nether_city`. Placement uses one attempt per 64x64 chunk region, with at least 32 chunks between cities.
The region size sits between jungle temples and ghast hives, but the minimum distance matches the ghast hive rule. Nether cities are spread out even though their regions are smaller than a ghast hive's.
Pyramid
Pyramids generate in biomes tagged `#betternether:has_structure/pyramid`. Like jungle temples, they use one attempt per 32x32 chunk region with at least 8 chunks between pyramids.
Pyramids and jungle temples follow identical placement rules but occupy different biome tags, so the two structures do not compete for the same terrain.
Quick Reference

- Ghast Hive — `#betternether:has_structure/ghast_hive`, 80x80 region, 32 chunk minimum
- Jungle Temples — `#betternether:has_structure/jungle_temples`, 32x32 region, 8 chunk minimum
- Nether City — `#betternether:has_structure/nether_city`, 64x64 region, 32 chunk minimum
- Pyramid — `#betternether:has_structure/pyramid`, 32x32 region, 8 chunk minimum
Search Tips
Start with the structures that have the smallest regions and tightest spacing. Jungle temples and pyramids attempt placement most often, so they turn up sooner during ordinary exploration. Altars and gardens follow, since their regions are moderate and their minimum spacing is only 16 chunks.
Ghast hives and nether cities demand the most travel. Both enforce a 32 chunk minimum, and the ghast hive's 80x80 region makes it the hardest to stumble across. If you are hunting either of these, pick a direction and keep moving rather than searching in circles.
Remember that biome tags control whether a structure can appear at all. A region that never overlaps the right tag will not produce the structure no matter how many chunks you cross.
