Brewing Potions in the Botanical Brewery: Flasks and Incense Storage

guide

The Botanical Brewery is Botania's station for producing Brews, liquid mixtures that function as variants on ordinary Potions. Because Mana serves as the base for these creations, brewing fits naturally into Botania's magic system. Rather than following the single-reagent pattern of vanilla potions, Brews use fixed recipes that combine several reagents, and every vial produced holds multiple doses instead of one.

What Brewing Requires

Setting up a Brewing operation calls for a Botanical Brewery, Vials, Mana, and the reagents for whichever Brew you want. Mana acts as both the solvent and the energy supply, and it arrives through Mana Bursts. Aiming a Mana Spreader at the Brewery is enough to feed it.

Running the Brewery

Operating the Botanical Brewery is straightforward. Place a Vial into it by right-clicking or dropping it in, then add each required ingredient the same way. Once every reagent is present, wait a few moments for the Brewery to take in the needed Mana, and the finished Brew drops into your inventory automatically.

Partially used Vials are not wasted. You can combine them with other Vials holding the same Brew in a crafting grid to top them up.

Simple Brews

Some Brews mirror familiar potions. A Swiftness-style Brew grants Speed II to whoever drinks it. A Strength-style Brew grants Strength II. A Haste-style Brew grants Haste II.

Complex Brews

Other Brews go beyond mimicking standard potions, either layering multiple effects or providing entirely new benefits. One applies both helpful and harmful effects at once, leaving the drinker empowered but exposed. Another restores health whenever the affected player kills a creature. A third makes the drinker completely immune to fall damage.

Some complex Brews project auras instead of affecting only the drinker. One creates an aura of emptiness, preventing natural mob spawning within a 128-block radius. Another creates an aura of bloodthirstiness, causing mobs to spawn within 64 blocks regardless of light or other conditions, though it fails if the drinker is also under the emptiness effect. A fishing-focused Brew greatly improves fishing proficiency and catches fish and other loot twice as fast. One final Brew clears every potion effect on the player when quaffed, whether beneficial or harmful.

Brewing Flasks

Alfglass is more malleable than the Managlass used for Vials, and a Flask made from it serves as the typical Elven container for Brews. A Flask holds six doses compared to a Vial's four. Brewing the same recipe into a Flask costs the same ingredients but twice the Mana. Because a Flask's bottleneck is wider, its contents can be drunk faster.

Brew Incenses

Liquid Brews wear off quickly and Vials consume inventory space. Incense Sticks address both problems. Sticks are infused with Brew effects the same way containers are, but require roughly ten times the Mana.

Place an Incense Stick on an Incense Plate by right-clicking the plate while holding the stick, then light it with Flint and Steel. Once lit, the stick cannot be retrieved. One stick lasts sixty times longer than the same brew in liquid form before it runs dry.

A burning stick grants its infused Brew effect to every player within a 30-block radius of the plate. Not every Brew works as incense; Instant Health and Absorption sticks will not brew, and neither will any Brew carrying more than one effect.

For automation, the Incense Plate accepts items from Hoppers or other inputs. It emits a Comparator signal of 1 when holding a stick and 2 while burning one. A Mana Burst carrying a Kindle Lens that strikes a plate with an unlit stick will light it.

Brew Recipes

The Brew has 20 recipes. All of them begin with Nether Wart. Examples include Nether Wart plus Golden Apple and Potato; Nether Wart plus Raw Cod, Nether Quartz, and Golden Carrot; Nether Wart plus Fermented Spider Eye, Lapis Lazuli, Fire Charge, and Iron Ingot; Nether Wart plus Nether Quartz, Emerald, and Melon Slice; and Nether Wart plus Gunpowder, Rotten Flesh, Bone, String, and Ender Pearl.
