Opening the Alfheim Portal and Trading for Elven Resources and Dreamwood

guide

Opening the Alfheim portal and trading for elven resources and dreamwood is the gateway to Botania's elven content. Long ago, the Elves lived alongside Minecraftians, but they were banished to their own realm, Alfheim, for reasons nobody remembers. Experiments have since produced a theoretical method for reconnecting the two worlds, though building the portal is demanding work.

Building the Portal

The structure calls for a substantial set of materials. You need eight blocks of Livingwood, three Glimmering Livingwood blocks, an Elven Gateway Core, and at least two Mana Pools paired with Natura Pylons. The Livingwood blocks accept any variant, whether logs or wood, stripped or not, so mixing types is fine.

The Elven Gateway Core and the Natura Pylons must each be crafted. Around the Core, you need an area of 11x11x11 containing at least two Mana Pools, each with a Natura Pylon placed directly above it. Use a Wand of the Forest on the core block to open the gateway for the first time. This initial activation draws a huge amount of Mana from the Pools.

Once running, the portal pulls Mana equally from every pool that has a Pylon. If any single pool empties, the connection closes.

What the Portal Can and Cannot Do

The link between worlds is too weak to move living beings, so traveling to Alfheim in person is impossible. Items, however, can pass through, though Mana from the surrounding Pools is required for an item to survive the return trip. Knowledge of Alfheim remains limited to what the lexicon records, since elven knowledge has been almost entirely lost. The Elves themselves suggest that letting them examine the book could yield further insight.

Trading with the Elves

Alfheim holds many valuable resources, but competition among the Elven clans makes most of them scarce. The Elves you have contacted are willing to trade resources native to their lands: Dreamwood, Elementium, Pixie Dust, and Dragonstones. Dreamwood, like Livingwood, can be crafted into decorative blocks.

The Elves also want Nether Quartz, a white material from the Nether, because their own quartz is tinted green. Their quartz behaves identically to other quartz types, including Nether Quartz and its decorative variants.

Alfheim also produces its own glass, Alfglass, which is quite transparent and shows different patterning depending on where it is placed. The Elves trade it for Managlass.

Known trades include:

Note that sending an item the Elves have not agreed to trade for means they treat it as a gift and keep it.

A Message from the Elves

The Elves found the lexicon when an old portal frame spontaneously opened a link to another world. On behalf of all Elven Garde, they thank you for providing a repository of your world's knowledge. After discussion within the High Council of Elven Garde, they agreed to cooperate, since the lexicon references resources from your world that do not exist in theirs.

The link cannot transfer living beings due to the sheer distance between realms, but it does let them change the synchronization of time across the worlds, which is how the book returns so quickly from your perspective. The Elves are well-stocked on Mana and magical energies, so the portal will not close on their end. Their offer is straightforward: resources you lack, in exchange for resources they lack. Their scribes have transcribed much of their world's knowledge into the lexicon, and they hope it encourages you to invest in their materials.
