Harvesting Soot Deposits and Crafting Charcoal in Burnt

guide

Wildfires and smoldering timbers leave harvestable soot deposits across adjacent blocks in Burnt. Instead of leaving destroyed terrain as a total loss, players can collect accumulated carbon residue to produce black dye, compress emergency fuel, and salvage charred timber fragments.

How Soot Accumulates from Fires

When wooden structures, trees, or grasslands burn in Burnt, active combustion generates heavy smoke plumes. As smoke particles rise and billow against surrounding surfaces, the fire deposits physical layers of Soot onto nearby blocks.

Soot accumulates primarily on:

  • Stone, cobblestone, and masonry walls adjacent to open flames
  • Ceilings and overhangs directly above cooking fire pits and campfires
  • Ground blocks surrounding burned-down buildings and smoldering trees

Players can break these soot deposits by hand or with any tool to collect loose Soot items into their inventory.

Crafting Black Dye from Soot

Obtaining black dye in vanilla gameplay typically requires hunting squids for ink sacs or harvesting wither roses. In Burnt, soot offers a renewable, land-based alternative for textile crafting.

Placing 1 Soot into any crafting slot yields 1 Black Dye.

Because a single building fire or forest blaze can leave dozens of soot deposits on surrounding cliffs and foundations, collecting soot allows players to mass-produce black dye for leather armor, wool carpets, stained glass, and decorative concrete without setting up aquatic squid farms.

Compacting Soot and Salvaging Wood for Charcoal

Soot is concentrated elemental carbon, allowing players to compress it directly into solid fuel blocks:

  • Filling a 3x3 crafting grid with 9 Soot items compacts the loose ash into 1 Charcoal.

In addition to soot compaction, players surveying burned forests can salvage partially destroyed timber fragments:

This salvage mechanic ensures that lightning strikes and accidental forest fires provide abundant furnace fuel, turning destructive blazes into productive harvesting opportunities.

Sooty Masonry and Weathered Architecture

When intense fires rage against stone structures, heat and soot scorch the minerals permanently. The mod includes an entire palette of heat-scarred masonry:

  • Sooty Stone and Sooty Stone Bricks
  • Sooty Cobblestone and Sooty Mossy Cobblestone
  • Sooty Andesite, Sooty Diorite, and Sooty Granite
  • Sooty Bricks and Sooty Mud Bricks

These blocks feature blackened, soot-stained surfaces that cannot be scrubbed clean. Builders can integrate sooty masonry intentionally around blacksmith forges, blast furnaces, chimney flues, and ruined castles to create realistic scorch patterns and weathered atmosphere.
