Butchering Bosses and Unique Mobs for Rare Materials

guide

Butchering bosses and unique mobs for rare materials follows the same core process as handling regular creatures, with a few important differences. Because boss carcasses are too large and heavy to lift, you must leave them where they fall after the kill. When you land the final blow with a cleaver—or with any tool if the server owner has changed the settings—the body drops to the ground. The elder guardian is the exception, as its remains will drift in the water instead of sinking. From there, simply equip your cleaver and start carving.

Boss Carcass Requirements

You cannot butcher boss remains with just any blade. To obtain and process boss carcasses, you need a Netherite Cleaver. This is a hard requirement, so make sure you have one crafted and ready before attempting to harvest materials from these large foes.

Dragon Scale

Butchering an End Dragon yields Dragon Scales. These scales are essential for crafting Dragon Scale Armor. To turn them into something usable, combine the scales with netherite in a crafting table. The result is dragon scale ingots, which serve as the core component for the armor set.

Dragon Bones

End Dragons also provide Dragon Bones when butchered. Like the scales, these bones are a necessary ingredient for Dragon Scale Armor. Before they can be used in crafting, you must process them. Run the bones through a stonecutter to produce Spiked Dragon Bones, which are the refined form needed for further recipes.

Elder Guardian Eye

Butchering an elder guardian gives you an Elder Guardian Eye. This item has a practical use: you can craft it into a wearable version. When you wear the crafted eye and submerge yourself in water, it grants night vision, letting you see clearly in dark underwater areas. Note that recipes involving salt will accept salt from other mods as long as it uses the forge:salt or c:salt tag, so you are not limited to a single source of salt.

Elder Guardian Spike

The butchering process for elder guardians also produces Elder Guardian Spikes. These spikes are not just trophies. You can use them to build a spike trap. When mobs or players touch the trap, it deals damage to them. This makes the spikes useful for protecting your base or creating hazard zones.

Sculk Bones

Butchering a warden carcass gives you Sculk Bones. These bones have a unique secondary use beyond simple crafting. Take them to a pestle and mortar and grind them down to create sculk bone meal. This special bonemeal has a transformative effect: apply it to grass blocks to convert them into sculk. This lets you expand sculk areas or create your own sculk patches without needing to find them naturally.

Practical Notes

Always carry your Netherite Cleaver when hunting bosses, as switching tools mid-process will not work for the initial butchering. For regular mobs, the rules are more flexible, but bosses demand the higher-tier blade. The elder guardian’s floating carcass can be trickier to carve, so position yourself carefully in the water before starting. Also, remember that the materials you gather from these unique mobs are not interchangeable with standard drops—each one feeds into a specific crafting path, so plan your hunts around what you need to build. Whether you are after armor from the dragon or traps and vision from the elder guardian, the butchering table is where these rare materials begin their journey into useful gear.
