Camera Overhaul Settings Guide: Idle Sway and Screen Shake Options

guide

Camera Overhaul Settings is the configuration screen where you control the mod's camera motion effects. Everything here is adjusted through the interface rather than through crafting, and the options divide into two broad groups: the idle sway behaviour and the screen shake system. This guide covers those two areas specifically, along with the toggles that govern whether the effects apply at all.

Master Controls

Before tuning individual values, check the switches that decide whether the effects run.

  • Enable the mod's effects turns every feature of the mod on or off at once. Use it as a quick kill switch when you want a completely vanilla camera.
  • Enable In Third Person keeps the effects active in third-person view. Turning it off restricts everything to first-person only.
  • Context Transition Smoothing sets how gradually the camera blends between situational profiles, such as the difference between walking and swimming.

Idle Camera Sway

The sway system produces gentle random drift once you stop moving. Four settings shape it.

  • Camera Sway Intensity — how strong the drift becomes.
  • Camera Sway Frequency — how quickly the drift moves back and forth.
  • Camera Sway Fade-in Delay — how long you must stand still before the drift begins appearing.
  • Camera Sway Fade-In Length — how long the drift takes to reach full presence after that delay has passed.
  • Camera Sway Fade-Out Length — how long the drift takes to disappear once you start moving again.

A short delay with a long fade-in gives a slow, subtle arrival of the sway. A long delay keeps the camera steady during brief pauses.

Screen Shake Limits

Two settings cap the entire shake system, applying across every source.

  • Screen Shakes Max Intensity — the upper bound on how strong any shake can become.
  • Screen Shakes Max Frequency — how rapidly shake rotations reverse direction or oscillate.

Lower the maximum intensity if shakes feel overwhelming; lower the maximum frequency if the motion feels too jittery.

Screen Shake Trauma Sources

Trauma values decide how much shake each individual event contributes. Each is expressed as a value between 0 and 1.

  • Explosion Screen Shake Trauma — the shake contributed by explosions.
  • Thunder Screen Shake Trauma — the shake contributed by thunder tied to lightning bolts.
  • Hand Swing Screen Shake Trauma — the shake contributed by any action that swings the player's arm. The description notes this is best kept very low.

Setting a trauma value to zero removes that source's contribution entirely without disabling the others.

Movement and Look Factors

These options shape camera motion from player movement and mouse turning, and they interact with how the shake and sway read on screen.

  • Strafing Roll Factor — how much the camera rolls when you move sideways.
  • Forward Velocity Pitch Factor — how much the camera pitches when you move forward or backward.
  • Vertical Velocity Pitch Factor — how much the camera pitches from upward or downward movement.
  • Horizontal Velocity Smoothing Factor — how smooth the pitch and roll from horizontal movement are.
  • Vertical Velocity Smoothing Factor — how smooth the pitch from vertical movement is.
  • Camera Smoothing Factor — global interpolation of the camera's pitch and yaw. It does not affect gameplay or aim.
  • Mouselook Roll Accumulation — how readily turning horizontally builds up camera roll.
  • Mouselook Roll Intensity — the ceiling on roll produced by horizontal turning.
  • Mouselook Roll Smoothing — how smoothly that roll decays afterward.

Adjusting Values In Practice

Change one setting at a time and observe the result in motion, since these values interact. If idle sway never appears, check the fade-in delay first. If shakes feel excessive, reduce the maximum intensity before lowering individual trauma sources. If turning feels disorienting, bring down the mouselook roll intensity or accumulation. Any hotkey mentioned by the mod's own controls can be rebound in the controls menu; use the corresponding hotkey there rather than assuming a default.
