Cave Dust Settings Guide: Enhanced Detection, Superflat Worlds, Resetting, and Reloading

guide

Cave Dust is controlled entirely through its on-screen interface and hotkeys, and this guide covers its detection accuracy, superflat world behaviour, and the reset and reload actions.

Opening the Interface

The mod's options are presented as a settings screen rather than something you build or craft. Inside it you will find toggles, sliders, and buttons for every behaviour described below. Movement between options and adjustment of values is done with the usual interface controls, so no special knowledge is required beyond opening the screen.

Turning Cave Dust On and Off

The main switch reports its state as either Cave Dust: Enabled or Cave Dust: Disabled. When you change it, the prompt you see is either Enable cave dust particles? or Disable cave dust particles?, depending on which direction you are switching. Once enabled, particles appear according to the depth and limit settings described further down.

Enhanced Detection

Enhanced detection has two states: Enhanced detection: Enabled and Enhanced detection: Disabled. With it turned on, the mod performs more accurate checks by using the position of the particles themselves rather than the player's position. The trade-off is a performance cost, so on a weaker machine you may prefer to leave it off. Switch it on when accuracy matters more than frame rate.

Superflat World Support

Superflat particles is a separate toggle with the states Superflat particles: Enabled and Superflat particles: Disabled. It decides whether particles are allowed to appear in superflat worlds at all. If you play on flat terrain and want the dust effect there, enable it; if you would rather keep those worlds clean, disable it. This setting is independent of the main Cave Dust switch, so both need to be in the enabled state for particles to show in a superflat world.

Depth and Spawn Limits

Several options shape where and how much dust appears.

  • Upper limit height and Lower limit height define the vertical band the mod works within. The upper limit is the height at which particles fade out and stop spawning, measured against the player's y position. The lower limit is the height at which particles spawn most heavily, also based on the player's y position.
  • Particle multiplier scales the number of particles produced. Raising it multiplies the amount spawned, and lowering it reduces the count.
  • Velocity randomness controls how unpredictable the movement of each particle is. Higher values scatter their motion more; lower values keep it steadier.
  • Maximum width and maximum height options set the largest dimensions used when spawning a particle, limiting how far a single spawn can reach.

There is also a setting for the amount of particles spawned at any given depth, which works alongside the multiplier to determine overall density.

Choosing a Particle

The particle selector shows the current particle with a label such as Particle to spawn. Clicking it cycles through the available particles one at a time. If a particle cannot be applied, the mod reports Error setting particle, skipping to next particle! and moves on automatically, so a single bad entry will not block the rest.

Resetting Your Settings

A reset control is available for restoring defaults. When you use it, you are asked Are you sure you want to reset all settings? Confirming clears your current configuration and returns everything to its original values. Because this affects every option at once, check your limits and multiplier values before agreeing.

Reloading the Config

The mod can reload its configuration while running. When this completes, it reports Reloaded config. Use this after changing settings outside the interface, or whenever you want the mod to pick up its stored values again without restarting. If particles are enabled at the time, the confirmation reads Enabled particles; if they are switched off, it reads Disabled particles.

Quick Reference

  • Main switch: Cave Dust: Enabled / Cave Dust: Disabled
  • Accuracy: Enhanced detection: Enabled / Enhanced detection: Disabled
  • Flat worlds: Superflat particles: Enabled / Superflat particles: Disabled
  • Particle choice: click the Particle to spawn entry to cycle
  • Reset: confirm Are you sure you want to reset all settings?
  • Reload: watch for Reloaded config

Any action that has a dedicated hotkey can be bound in the controls menu; assign the corresponding hotkey there rather than relying on a preset.
