Tuning Cave Dust Particle Amount, Multiplier, Velocity Randomness, and Spawn Limits

guide

Cave Dust gives you direct control over how its particles look and where they appear, and most of that control lives in its settings interface rather than in any crafting recipe. This guide covers the options that shape particle quantity, movement, and the vertical and horizontal bounds where particles are allowed to spawn.

Choosing the Particle Type

The Particle to spawn setting decides which particle Cave Dust uses. Click it to cycle through the available particles. If the mod cannot apply your selection, it reports that it is skipping to the next particle instead, so a bad choice will not leave you with nothing.

Turning Cave Dust On and Off

Two states are shown for the mod itself: Cave Dust: Enabled and Cave Dust: Disabled. The settings screen also presents the choice as a question, offering Enable cave dust particles? and Disable cave dust particles? as the two answers. Use whichever phrasing appears in your interface to switch the effect on or off.

Amount and Multiplier

The Amount of particles to spawn at any given depth setting controls the base number of particles produced. This is your starting point for density: raise it for a busier cave, lower it for a subtler effect.

The Particle multiplier setting then scales that base amount. Because it multiplies rather than replaces the amount, it is the quickest way to make a broad change to overall density without retuning the base value. If you want more particles everywhere, increase the multiplier; if you want fewer, decrease it.

Velocity Randomness

The Velocity randomness setting controls how unpredictable the movement of the particles is. A low value keeps particle motion more uniform, while a higher value spreads their velocities across a wider range, giving a more scattered, unsettled look.

Spawn Width and Height Limits

Cave Dust provides separate limits for how far out and how far up or down particles may appear.

The Maximum width to spawn particle option sets the widest horizontal extent at which a particle can be created.

The Maximum height to spawn particle option sets the tallest extent at which a particle can be created.

For vertical placement, two further settings work together. The Upper limit height is the point where particles fade out and stop spawning, and it is measured using your own y position. The Lower limit height is the point where particles spawn most heavily, also measured from your y position. In other words, density is greatest at the lower limit and tapers away as you approach the upper limit. Tune these two values to match the depth range you actually explore.

Enhanced Detection

Enhanced detection can be set to Enabled or Disabled. When enabled, the mod performs more accurate checks by using the position of the particles themselves rather than your position. This improves accuracy at the cost of some performance, so disable it if you notice a frame rate drop.

Superflat Worlds

The Superflat particles setting, set to Enabled or Disabled, determines whether particles are allowed to spawn in superflat worlds. Turn it off if you do not want the effect in those worlds.

Resetting and Reloading

A reset option is available, and it asks for confirmation before proceeding, so you will not wipe your settings by accident. There is also a reload action that refreshes the configuration and reports when it has completed.

Applying Your Changes

Adjust the values described above in the settings interface, then confirm the reset prompt only when you genuinely want to start over. If you change the particle type, watch for the skip message, which tells you the chosen particle could not be applied and the mod moved on to the next one. For any toggle or action that is bound to a control rather than clicked in the interface, use the corresponding hotkey and set it in the controls menu.
