Chat Patches Chat Log Guide: Saving, Loading, Backups, and Clearing
Chat Patches keeps a record of your chat that you can save, reload, back up, or wipe, and you control how often it writes itself to disk.
Saving and Loading the Chat Log
The mod can store your chat history so it can be put back into the chat during a later session. The chatlog setting controls whether this happens at all. When it is on, your messages are written to a log that can be brought back later.
Two actions handle the manual side of this:
- The save action writes the chat log to disk. Be aware that this replaces whatever was already stored in that file.
- The load action puts the stored chat log back into the chat. This does not wipe the chat first, so everything in the log gets tacked onto the end of whatever is already showing.
Both of these are bound to their own hotkeys, which you assign yourself in the controls menu.
Save Interval
The chatlogSaveInterval option decides how many minutes pass before the log is written to disk. The smallest accepted value is 1. Setting it to 0 means the log is only saved when the game is paused. There is a warning attached: values under 5 will cause a lot of lag. Regardless of what you choose, the log is always saved when you exit.
Backing Up
The chatlogBackup action creates a separate copy of the chat log on disk. The new file is named with the prefix "backup_" followed by the current date and time in the pattern yyyy-MM-dd_HH.mm.ss. It lands in the same location as the regular chat log.
To reach that location, use the action that opens the logs folder. That folder holds both the chat log and any backups made from it.
Clearing the Chat Log
There are three separate clear actions, and each one targets a different slice of the log:
- chatlogClear removes every message.
- chatlogClearHistory removes only the messages you sent.
- chatlogClearMessages removes only the messages you received.
All three affect the log alone, not the chat currently on screen. None of them can be reversed, so treat them carefully. Like the other log actions, each is triggered by its own hotkey that you set in the controls menu.
One setting interacts with clearing: vanillaClearing makes messages disappear after you leave a world or server, the way the base game does. Turning it on erases the chat entirely and effectively turns the chat log off.
Related Notes
The chatMaxMessages option caps how many chat messages are kept, from the vanilla limit of 100 up to 32,767. A higher cap uses more memory.
If you also want unsent text to survive a forced chat closure, the tooltip feature covers that: drafts are stored when chat is closed against your will and can be sent the next time you open it.
