Sodium Chloride True Darkness, Fog, Particles, and Nametag Settings
Sodium Chloride is a performance and visual control mod configured entirely through its own settings screens and hotkeys rather than through crafting or items. This guide covers the True Darkness options, fog brightness controls, particle toggles, and nametag rendering switches, along with the closely related entity and block entity distance limits that often sit beside them.
True Darkness
The True Darkness group makes unlit areas genuinely dark instead of dim. Turning on Makes darkness more darker intensifies how strongly light falls off, so shadows deepen further than the base behavior.
Per-dimension switches decide where the effect applies. Enable on Overworld applies it in the Overworld. Enable on SkyLess dimensions applies it in dimensions that have no sky light at all. Enable in Other dimensions extends it to any remaining dimensions, though the option is marked as temporary and will eventually be replaced by a blacklist. Separate toggles exist for the Nether and the End.
Two related options change how light sources behave. One disables sky, fog, and moon brightness so that blocks become the only source of illumination. Another makes darkness respond to moon phases, with New Moon Bright (min) setting the brightness floor on a new moon and Full Moon Bright (max) setting the ceiling on a full moon.
Fog Brightness
Fog brightness is configured per dimension when darkness is active. Nether Fog Brightness controls how bright fog appears in the Nether, and End Fog Brightness does the same for the End.
Broader fog controls sit alongside these. Individual toggles remove fog entirely, remove it only in the Overworld, only in the Nether, or only in the End. A separate toggle removes the Blue Band effect across all dimensions. Enabling custom fog values unlocks three fields: one for where fog begins, one for where it ends, and one for its shape.
Void Horizon Height sets the Y level where the dark void plane begins to render. A value of 63 preserves vanilla behavior, while setting it to -64 removes the half-dark sky you would otherwise see below sea level in flat-style worlds.
Particles
The particle section begins with a search field for filtering entries. Rain Drop Particles enables the water falling particles seen during rain, and a second rain option controls the water drop particles that appear on floors. Block Cracking Particles enables the cracking effect while a block is being broken, and Block Breaking Particles enables the particles produced at the moment of breaking. Each entry notes which provider supplies the particle.
Nametags
Three switches control nametag rendering. Nametag on Players disables nametags for all players when turned off. Nametag on Entities does the same for all entities. Nametag on Item Frames disables nametags for items, including items placed inside item frames.
Distance Limits
These limits hide distant objects to improve performance. Max Entity Distance enables a configurable limit, with Entities Max Distance (Horizontal) hiding and stopping ticks for entities beyond that many blocks, and Entities Max Distance (Vertical) doing the same for entities below you. The vertical value should generally be lower than the horizontal one. A warning notes that with certain mods detected, vertical distance is ignored in favor of horizontal distance.
The same horizontal and vertical pattern applies to Max Monster Distance for hostile entities and Max Block Entity Distance for block entities such as machines.
Related Visual Options
Zoom turns on the zoom feature, activated with the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu), and a separate setting caps the maximum zoom reachable with the mouse wheel. If certain zoom mods are detected, this zoom is disabled automatically.
