Crafting the Ability Shield for Competitive Defense

The Ability Shield in Cobblemon is a competitive held item that permanently prevents the holder's ability from being changed or suppressed by enemy moves and effects.

Competitive Battle Protection

The Ability Shield provides complete immunity against effects that alter, swap, or disable abilities:

  • It blocks suppression abilities such as Weezing's Neutralizing Gas.
  • It shields against ability-ignoring properties from attacker abilities like Mold Breaker, Teravolt, and Turboblaze.
  • It prevents active move interference from Skill Swap, Worry Seed, Simple Beam, Entrainment, and Gastro Acid.
  • It stops contact-based ability overwrites, such as Cofagrigus's Mummy or Runerigus's Wandering Spirit.

Unlike consumable berries or Focus Sashes, the Ability Shield remains equipped permanently throughout the battle and is never consumed upon activation.

Crafting Recipe for the Ability Shield

To forge an Ability Shield, assemble the following components:

  • 2 Iron Ingots
  • 3 Diamonds
  • 1 Shield (vanilla wooden/iron shield)
  • 1 Amethyst Shard

Position the materials on a three-by-three crafting table:

  • Top row: place one Iron Ingot on the left, one Diamond in the middle, and one Iron Ingot on the right.
  • Middle row: place one Diamond on the left, your vanilla Shield in the center slot, and one Diamond on the right.
  • Bottom row: leave the left and right slots empty; place one Amethyst Shard in the bottom-middle slot.

This shaped matrix yields one Ability Shield. The combination of protective iron and crystalline diamond reflects its impenetrable defensive properties.

Strategic Value in Team Building

Equip the Ability Shield on Pokémon whose entire viability hinges on their ability remaining active:

  • Weather and Terrain setters like Pelipper (Drizzle) or Torkoal (Drought) ensure their climate buffs cannot be neutralized by opposing abilities.
  • Pokémon relying on defensive abilities like Unaware (Clefable, Dondozo) or Magic Bounce (Hatterene) can maintain their status shields against mold breaker attackers.
  • Sweepers using Speed Boost (Blaziken, Ninjask) guarantee continuous speed increases every turn without fear of disruption.
  • Slaking and Regigigas do not benefit from this item because Truant and Slow Start cannot be cleared by the shield itself, preventing exploits with negative innate abilities.
