Focus Sash Mechanics and Competitive Battle Strategy
The
Focus Sash in Cobblemon is an essential competitive held item that allows a Pokémon at full health to survive any single lethal hit with exactly one HP remaining.
Focus Sash Battle Mechanics
When equipped as a held item, the
Focus Sash acts as an insurance policy against devastating attacks:
- The holder must be at 100% of their maximum HP when the lethal attack lands.
- If an attack would otherwise cause the holder to faint, their HP drops to exactly 1 instead.
- The item triggers against direct damage attacks, special moves, and critical strikes.
- In competitive player-versus-player battles, the sash is consumed for the duration of the match and restored afterward.
If the holder has taken even a single point of chip damage from entry hazards like Stealth Rock or weather effects like sandstorms, the
Focus Sash will not activate. Players must ensure rapid hazard removal using moves like Rapid Spin or Defog to keep the sash viable.
Crafting the Focus Sash
Players can craft the
Focus Sash at a standard crafting table using the following recipe:
- 2
Blaze Powder - 2
Leather (or 2
Red Wool) - 1
Copper Ingot
Arrange the materials across the three-by-three crafting grid:
- Top row: place one
Blaze Powder in the top-left slot; leave the remaining slots empty. - Middle row: place one
Leather (or
Red Wool) in the middle-left slot, one
Copper Ingot in the center slot, and one
Leather (or
Red Wool) in the middle-right slot. - Bottom row: leave the first two slots empty; place one
Blaze Powder in the bottom-right slot.
This shaped recipe yields one
Focus Sash. The recipe accepts either animal leather or sheared red wool, allowing players in sheep-heavy biomes to produce sashes without locating cows.
Strategic Matchups and Roles
The
Focus Sash is most effective on fragile offensive Pokémon known as glass cannons:
- Fast sweepers with low defensive stats can survive an unexpected super-effective counterattack and retaliate with a game-winning strike.
- Hazard setters can guarantee the deployment of entry hazards or weather moves on the opening turn without fainting immediately.
- Counter and Mirror Coat users can absorb a massive hit at 1 HP and reflect double the damage back at the attacker.
- Endeavor users can drop down to 1 HP, equalize the opponent's health on the next turn, and finish them off with priority attacks like Quick Attack.
