Modify Pokémon Abilities with Special Items

guide

This guide explains how to understand and modify your Pokémon's abilities using special items. Pokémon in Cobblemon have abilities, which are special passive effects that can influence battles or other aspects of gameplay. Some Pokémon have different possible abilities, and you can change which ability your Pokémon currently has.

Ability Capsule

The Ability Capsule is an item used to change a Pokémon's ability. When you use an Ability Capsule on a Pokémon, its current ability will change to its alternative standard ability. This means if your Pokémon has one standard ability, it can switch to another standard ability it might possess.

Ability Patch

The Ability Patch is another item that modifies a Pokémon's ability. Using an Ability Patch on a Pokémon will change its ability to its alternative hidden ability. Hidden abilities are often rarer or more unique than standard abilities, providing different strategic options.

What an ability actually is

Every species has a small set of possible abilities, and an individual Pokémon carries exactly one of them. That single choice changes how the Pokémon behaves in a fight, which is why two of the same species can perform very differently. The two capsule items exist because the ability is fixed at capture and is otherwise permanent.

Choosing between the two items

The distinction is worth getting right before you spend either:

  • An Ability Capsule swaps between the ordinary abilities a species can have. If a species has two normal abilities, this moves the Pokémon from one to the other.
  • An Ability Patch is the one that reaches the hidden ability, which a capsule cannot do.

That makes the patch the rarer and more valuable of the two, and it means a capsule is wasted on a Pokémon you eventually want to carry a hidden ability. Decide which ability you are aiming for before using either item.

When to apply them

Apply an ability change before investing in the Pokémon rather than after. Levels, moves and held items all survive the change, so there is no mechanical penalty to switching late — but there is an opportunity cost in having trained a Pokémon whose ability you were always going to replace. If you are building a team deliberately, sort the abilities out first and train afterwards.
