Companion Mod Guide: Interface, Settings, and Pet Options
Companion 🐕 is a Minecraft utility mod that protects your pets and gives you control over how they follow, teleport, and travel with you. It works entirely through its on-screen interface and hotkeys rather than through crafting recipes, so you configure it by opening its settings and adjusting the options listed there.
Opening the Interface and Settings
The mod's options live in its own settings screen, reached through the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu). Once the screen is open, each option appears with a name and, where relevant, a short explanation of what it does. Changes you make there govern how your pets behave in the game. Because the mod is operated through the interface and hotkeys, there is nothing to build or craft to get started.
Pet Protection
The mod's core purpose is stated plainly: Protect your pets. Two related behaviours support this. One option makes your pets immortal — they never die. The trade-off is that at extremely low health their movement speed drops sharply, so a pet kept alive at the edge of death will lag well behind you. Another option allows pets to take damage from other players who are on your team, which is useful when you want friendly fire to remain possible for your own group.
Teleporting Pets
Several settings control when pets are moved to you. Pet Force Teleporting If Follow Failed forces a teleport when a pet fails to keep up by normal following. Pet Force Teleporting When Chunk Unload does the same when the chunk a pet occupies is unloaded. Log If Teleporting Failed writes a message to the console in the specific case where a pet could not be teleported because its chunk was unloaded, which helps you diagnose pets that go missing.
Player Respawn Teleporting Pets brings your pets to you when you respawn after dying. Always teleport horse keeps your horses with you by teleporting them whenever they end up too far away.
Portals and Dimensions
Portal Teleporting Pets makes your pets and any leashed animals travel with you when you go through a portal. Portal Max Teleported Pets caps how many animals come along; setting it to -1 makes the mod use the value of the maxEntityCramming gamerule instead of a fixed number. Player Nearby Change Dimension Radius sets the required proximity — a pet will not change dimension unless you are within that radius.
Dismounting Shoulder Pets
A group of settings handles getting shoulder pets off you. The described behaviour is that you jump in place to dismount them, and the surrounding options tune the conditions: Dismount Fall Distance, Dismount Damage Threshold, Dismount Under Water, and Dismount While Flying. Together these let you decide when a jump should release a shoulder pet, including while submerged or airborne.
Miscellaneous
Better Sweeping Edge Effect is a separate toggle that improves how the sweeping edge effect behaves. It sits alongside the pet options in the same settings screen, so you can enable or disable it with the rest of your configuration.
To use the mod, open its settings through the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu), review each option and its description, and adjust the values to match how you want your pets to follow, teleport, and accompany you through portals and respawns.
