Companion Mod Pet Safety Options: Immortality, Team Damage, and Horse Teleporting
Companion 🐕 is a Minecraft utility mod that protects your pets through a set of options you toggle in its interface. This guide covers the settings that control pet survival, damage from teammates, and teleporting behavior for horses and other animals.
Keeping Pets Alive
The mod's central promise is simple: Protect your pets. The immortality option makes your pets unable to die. There is a trade-off worth knowing before you switch it on — a pet at extremely low health moves much more slowly than normal. So while nothing can kill your pet, a badly hurt one will lag behind until it recovers. Plan around that if you rely on a pet for travel or combat support.
Team Damage
By default, a pet can be harmed by other players who are on your team. The team damage option changes that, letting you decide whether teammates are allowed to hurt your animals. Turn it off if you play alongside others and want to rule out accidental or deliberate hits from allies.
Teleporting Pets Through Portals
The Portal Teleporting Pets setting causes your pets and any leashed animals to come along when you go through a portal. A related limit, Portal Max Teleported Pets, caps how many animals travel with you. Set it to a specific number, or use -1 to fall back on the value of the maxEntityCramming gamerule.
There is also a radius control: Pet Won't Change Dimension Unless Owner Is Nearby. This restricts dimension changes to pets that are already close to you, so distant animals are not dragged across dimensions from far away.
Respawn and Follow Failures
Player Respawn Teleporting Pets brings your pets to you when you respawn. Two further options handle cases where a pet fails to keep up or gets left behind:
- Pet Force Teleporting If Follow Failed — forces a teleport when following breaks down.
- Pet Force Teleporting When Chunk Unload — forces a teleport when the chunk a pet occupies unloads.
If you want a record of problems, Log If Teleporting Failed writes a console message whenever a pet could not teleport because its chunk unloaded.
Horses
Always teleport horse keeps your horses with you. When a horse ends up too far away, the mod moves it back to your side automatically, so you do not have to retrieve it manually.
Dismounting Shoulder Pets
Shoulder pets come off when you jump in place, and several options shape that behavior: Dismount Under Water, Dismount While Flying, Dismount Fall Distance, and Dismount Damage Threshold. These govern the conditions under which a shoulder pet leaves your shoulder — whether that happens in water, mid-air, after a certain fall, or past a damage limit.
A Note on Controls
Most of these are settings you adjust directly in the mod's interface. Where an action is bound to a control rather than a menu entry, use the corresponding hotkey and set it in the controls menu. No specific key is assigned by default for these actions, so choose one that does not conflict with your other bindings.
Better Sweeping Edge Effect
The Better Sweeping Edge Effect option is also part of the mod's feature set. Enable it if you want the sweeping edge behavior adjusted while you play.
Putting It Together
Work through the options in a sensible order. Decide first whether pets should be immortal, then whether teammates may damage them. After that, configure portal travel, respawn behavior, and the forced-teleport fallbacks. Horse teleporting and shoulder-pet dismount rules come last, since they apply to specific situations rather than every session. Review the settings again whenever you change how you play — a group server, for example, makes the team damage option far more relevant than single-player does.
