Portal, Dimension, Respawn, and Follow-Failure Teleporting Options for Pets and Leashed Animals

guide

Companion 🐕 includes several settings that control when your pets and leashed animals teleport alongside you. These options cover portal travel, dimension changes, player respawns, chunk unloading, and cases where a pet falls too far behind. All of them are configured through the mod's interface rather than through crafting.

Portal Teleporting

The Portal Teleporting Pets option makes your pets and leashed animals travel with you when you go through a portal. With it enabled, you do not need to lead each animal through separately; they come along as part of your trip.

The Portal Max Teleported Pets option sets a limit on how many animals can be brought along in a single portal trip. A value of -1 means the limit follows the maxEntityCramming gamerule instead of a number you pick yourself. Set a positive number if you want a fixed cap on the animals teleported with you.

Dimension Changes

The Pet Won't Change Dimension Unless Owner Is Nearby option, paired with the Player Nearby Change Dimension Radius setting, controls how close you must be before a pet will follow you into another dimension. When this restriction is active, a pet that is outside the configured radius stays behind rather than changing dimension with you. Adjust the radius to decide how tightly your pets must be grouped before a dimension transition carries them across.

Player Respawn

The Player Respawn Teleporting Pets option brings your pets to you when you respawn. Enable it if you want your animals to reappear with you after death instead of being left where they were.

Chunk Unload and Follow Failure

Two options handle pets that would otherwise be stranded. Pet Force Teleporting When Chunk Unload forces a pet to teleport when the chunk it occupies is unloaded, preventing it from being left in an unloaded area.

Pet Force Teleporting If Follow Failed forces a teleport when a pet fails to keep up with you. This is useful for animals that get stuck or fall too far behind during travel.

If you want a record of these events, enable Log If Teleporting Failed. This writes a message to the console whenever a pet fails to teleport because its chunk was unloaded, so you can check whether an animal was left behind.

Horse Teleporting

The Always teleport horse option keeps your horses close by teleporting them whenever they are too far from you. This applies specifically to horses and works independently of the pet-focused teleport settings above.

Companion 🐕 also provides protection settings that affect your pets more broadly. Pets never die, though their movement speed drops sharply when their health is extremely low. Pets can also be harmed by players who are on your team. The mod's overall purpose is to protect your pets, and these behaviors apply alongside the teleporting options described above.

Operating These Settings

Each option listed here is a toggle or a value you set in the mod's interface. For any action that is bound to a control rather than a menu entry, use the corresponding hotkey and assign it in the controls menu if it is not already set.
