Cyclic Functional Blocks Guide: Spikes, Plates, Conveyors, and Spawn Control
Cyclic adds several functional blocks that handle combat, movement, and mob control: spikes, plates, conveyors, and the Peace Candle. Each one solves a specific problem, and most are simple to set up once you know how they respond to redstone and interaction.
Spikes
Spikes are directional damage blocks. You can place them in any orientation, so they work on floors, walls, or ceilings. The key rule for all spike types is that they only extend when a redstone signal reaches them. With no signal, they stay retracted and harmless.
There are three spike variants:
Diamond Spikes damage any creature or player that touches them. Their attacks are handled through a fake player, which means loot tables trigger as if a player made the kill.
Iron Spikes damage entities on contact, with no special drop behavior.
Flame Spikes set entities on fire when they make contact.
Because spikes need a signal to extend, wire them to a lever, pressure plate, or any redstone source you can switch on and off. A retracted spike is safe to walk over, which makes them useful for traps you want to arm only when needed.
Bounce Plate
The
Bounce Plate throws any entity that touches it upward into the air. Anything that steps on it gets launched, so place it where you want vertical movement — a launch pad, a trap, or a way to fling mobs into a fall or a spike field.
Conveyor Belt
The
Conveyor Belt carries every entity standing on it. It stores several settings in its blockstate: the type, the speed, and the dye color.
Types cover straight runs, corners, and up/down ramps. To change the type, place the belt in the world and use a Wooden Wrench on it — each use cycles to the next type.
Two more interactions control the rest:
- Hold a redstone torch and interact with the belt to switch its speed.
- Hold a dye and use it on the belt to switch its color.
Both of these changes spread to nearby connected belts, so you can adjust a whole line from one spot. If you want to inspect the current settings in detail, check the F3 debug screen while looking at the block.
Peace Candle
The
Peace Candle stops natural hostile mob spawns over a large area, covering space both above and below it. The exact radius depends on config values. Interact with the candle to light it or turn it off, so you can toggle spawn suppression whenever you like.
Putting Them Together
These blocks combine well. A conveyor can feed entities into extended spikes, a bounce plate can toss them onto a spike wall, and a Peace Candle can keep a build area clear while you work. Remember the shared rule for spikes — no redstone signal means no damage — and the shared rule for conveyors — wrench for type, torch for speed, dye for color, with changes propagating to connected belts. Set each block up with those behaviors in mind and they will do their jobs without extra machinery.
