Adjusting Block Particle Range and Count Multipliers in Drip Sounds
Drip Sounds includes three settings that control how block particles behave: dripChance, blockAnimateRangeMultiplier, and blockAnimateCountMultiplier. All three live in the general section of the Drip Sounds Config. This guide explains what each one changes, how they interact, and how to pick values that match vanilla or trade performance for denser effects.
Understanding the three multipliers
dripChance controls how likely a drip particle is to appear when a block is randomly animated. The vanilla rate is one in ten. Raising the value makes drips less common; lowering it makes them more frequent.
blockAnimateRangeMultiplier scales the maximum distance at which block particle effects can appear. This covers drips, smoke, falling leaves, fireflies, and bubble columns, among others. It also affects certain ambient sounds tied to blocks, such as fire, lava, and portals. A value of 1.0 matches vanilla. Higher values let particles spawn farther from the player.
blockAnimateCountMultiplier scales how many blocks update their particle effects each tick. This is the setting with real performance weight: the higher you push it, the more work the game does every tick, and the impact is noticeable. Again, 1.0 matches vanilla, and higher values mean more blocks producing particles.
Keeping density consistent when you change range
Range and count are linked if you want the visual density to stay the same. When you increase the range, more blocks fall inside the affected area, so you need to raise the count to compensate. The rule is to set the count multiplier to the square of the range multiplier. For example, a range of 2.0 calls for a count of 4.0, and a range of 3.0 calls for a count of 9.0. Skipping this step leaves the effect looking thinner than vanilla even though particles now appear farther away.
Performance tradeoffs
Range alone is relatively cheap, since it only changes the radius the game checks. Count is the expensive part. Every tick, the game updates particle effects for the number of blocks you have allowed, so multiplying that number multiplies the workload. If you notice stuttering or dropped frames after raising the count, lower it first. A moderate range increase paired with the matching squared count is usually a safer starting point than a large count on its own.
Operating the settings
Open the general section of the Drip Sounds Config to reach all three options. Adjust each value directly in the interface. There is no crafting step and no item involved; everything is handled through the config screen and the mod's hotkeys. If a particular action has a corresponding hotkey, set it in the controls menu rather than assuming a default.
If the options are unavailable
The block particle options can be disabled when another mod already provides the same feature. In that case you will see a notice reading Block Particle options disabled due to a mod conflict, listing the conflicting mod. One known example is the mod "Effective," which already includes this functionality. When that happens, the range and count multipliers cannot be changed here, and you should configure the feature in the other mod instead.
Related sound options
Two further settings sit alongside the particle controls. useDripstoneSounds switches between the Dripstone water and lava drip sounds introduced in 1.17 and the sounds used by older versions of the mod. Enable it for the newer audio, or leave it off for the older set. soundCategory determines which audio category drip sounds are grouped under, so you can control their volume alongside other sounds in that category.
Quick reference
- dripChance: one in ten is vanilla; higher means less common.
- blockAnimateRangeMultiplier: 1.0 is vanilla; higher extends particle range and some ambient block sounds.
- blockAnimateCountMultiplier: 1.0 is vanilla; higher means more blocks update per tick and a heavier performance cost.
- To preserve vanilla density after a range change, set count to the square of range.
- If the block particle options are locked, another mod such as "Effective" already covers them.
