Tuning dripChance in Drip Sounds to Control Drip Particle Frequency
The dripChance setting in Drip Sounds controls how often a drip particle spawns when a block is randomly animated, letting you make drips more or less common than vanilla. This guide explains what the setting does and how to adjust it through the mod's interface.
What dripChance Does
When a block is randomly animated, the game decides whether a drip particle should appear. dripChance sets the odds of that happening. The vanilla rate is one in ten, so a value representing one in ten keeps drip particles at their normal frequency. Raising the value makes drips less common, because a larger number means a smaller chance per animation. Lowering it makes drips more frequent.
If you want fewer drip particles than vanilla, increase dripChance. If you want more, decrease it. The setting only affects how often drips spawn; it does not change their sounds or appearance.
Opening the Config
All of these options live in the general section of the Drip Sounds Config. Open the mod's interface using the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu) to reach the config screen, then locate the general category. From there you can adjust dripChance and the related particle settings described below.
Related Particle Settings
Two multipliers work alongside dripChance and affect how block particle effects behave. They apply to drips as well as smoke, falling leaves, fireflies, bubble columns, and similar effects.
- blockAnimateRangeMultiplier — Multiplies the maximum range for block particle effects. It also affects ambient sounds from some blocks, such as fire, lava, and portals. A value of 1.0 matches vanilla. Higher values let particles spawn farther away.
- blockAnimateCountMultiplier — Multiplies how many blocks update their particle effects each tick. A value of 1.0 matches vanilla, and higher values mean more blocks spawn particles. This setting has a noticeable performance impact as you raise it.
If you increase the range, you may want to increase the count as well to keep particle density looking the same as vanilla. To do that, set the count to the square of the range: a range of 2.0 pairs with a count of 4.0, and a range of 3.0 pairs with a count of 9.0.
Sound Options
Drip Sounds also includes sound-related settings in the same config:
- useDripstoneSounds — When enabled, drip sounds use the Dripstone water and lava sounds. When disabled, the mod uses sounds from older versions instead.
- soundCategory — Sets the sound category that drip sounds belong to, so you can control their volume through that category's slider.
A Note on Conflicts
If the blockAnimateNotSupported message appears, the block particle options are disabled because of a mod conflict. In that case, another mod already provides this feature, so the related settings cannot be changed here.
Suggested Approach
Start by setting dripChance to the vanilla rate of one in ten and listen or watch for a while. If drips feel too frequent, raise the value; if they feel too sparse, lower it. Leave the range and count multipliers at 1.0 unless you specifically want particles spread over a wider area or a denser update pattern, and remember to balance count against range to preserve vanilla density. Keep an eye on performance if you raise the count multiplier, since it affects how many blocks are processed each tick.
