Dynamic Lights Mod Guide: What It Does and How to Open Its Settings
Dynamic Lights is a server-side Minecraft utility that makes light-producing entities and items actually cast light around them. A torch, lantern, or other supported object will illuminate its surroundings instead of staying dark until placed. The mod also extends this behaviour to certain mobs and enchanted gear, so a burning entity or a charged weapon can brighten the area near it. Because the effect runs on the server, everyone connected to that world sees the same lighting without needing anything extra on their own client.
Opening the Settings Menu
You do not craft anything to use this mod. Everything is handled through its interface and hotkeys. To reach the configuration screen for a single world, join that world and run the command `/function dynamiclights:settings`. That opens the Dynamic Lights Configuration interface, where you can adjust the options described below.
The same interface also contains a Global Settings section. Anything you change there applies to every world rather than just the one you are currently in. After editing global options, you must leave and re-enter any world before the changes take effect.
What You Can Turn On or Off
The settings are organised as a list of things that can emit light. Each entry has its own toggle, and most are enabled by default.
- Enable Dynamic Lights — the master option for the whole feature. It is on by default.
- Entities with the glowing potion effect — lets glowing mobs and players give off light.
- Ghasts about to shoot a fireball — makes a ghast glow while it is preparing to fire. This one carries a warning: leaving it on can hurt the performance of some mob farms.
- Armor trimmed with amethyst — amethyst-trimmed armor pieces emit light. This applies only to Minecraft 1.20 and later.
- Items enchanted with Fire Aspect — a weapon with Fire Aspect lights up its surroundings.
- Tridents enchanted with Riptide inside water — a Riptide trident glows while it is in water. This only functions when the water sensitivity option is turned on.
- Tridents enchanted with Channeling during a thunderstorm — a Channeling trident emits light while a storm is active.
Water Sensitivity Options
A separate group of toggles controls how the mod treats items around water. These interact with each other, so read them together.
- Water Sensitivity Check — when active, water-sensitive objects such as torches stop giving off light once they are submerged. It is on by default.
- Sound cues — when active, a sound plays whenever a water-sensitive item switches off or back on. It is on by default.
- Rain counts as water — when active, being touched by rain is treated the same as being underwater. This only matters if the water sensitivity check is enabled, and it applies only to Minecraft 1.19.4 and later.
Using the Mod In Practice
Once the options you want are enabled, no further action is needed during play. Carry a supported light source, wear the right armor, or fight with the right enchantment, and the light appears automatically. If something that should be glowing is not, check whether the relevant toggle is off, whether the water sensitivity check has switched it off, or whether a global change still needs a world reload. For per-world tweaks, reopen the configuration with the command above; for changes that should follow you everywhere, use the Global Settings section and rejoin afterwards.
