Configuring Enhanced Sound Processing in Dynamic Surroundings
Dynamic Surroundings provides a set of options for shaping how sound behaves in your game, including reverb, occlusion, stereo handling, and the background threads that do the heavy lifting. All of these live under the Enhanced Sound Processing section of the mod's configuration options.
The Main Toggle
Enhanced Sound Processing is the master switch for this group of features. Its tooltip describes it as the control for reverb, occlusion, and related processing. Nothing else in this section does anything until this is turned on — in particular, the stereo conversion option below only functions while enhanced processing is active.
Stereo to Mono Conversion
This option controls whether stereo audio is converted to mono on the fly when needed. Like the rest of the section, it depends on Enhanced Sound Processing being enabled first. If you leave the master toggle off, this setting has no effect.
Occlusion Processing
Occlusion Processing governs sound muffling — the effect where audio is dampened when blocks sit between you and the source. The tooltip warns that switching this on adds work for the background workers, and that on weaker machines this extra load may hurt performance. If you notice stuttering after enabling it, this is a likely culprit.
Background Worker Threads
Background Worker Threads sets how many background threads handle enhanced sound processing. The tooltip is explicit: do not change this number casually, because doing so can affect performance. Treat it as a value to leave alone unless you have a specific reason to adjust it.
Reverb Controls
Three settings shape how reverb is calculated. All three trade CPU cost against fidelity — raising a value improves the result and costs more processing, while lowering it does the reverse.
- Reverb Ray Projections — how many rays are cast outward from a sound's position when working out its reverb. The tooltip calls this the primary setting to adjust when managing performance.
- Reverb Ray Reflections — the upper limit on how many times any single ray can bounce.
- Reverb Ray Projection Distance — the total distance in blocks that a ray travels while the reverb is being computed.
Related Sound System Options
Elsewhere in the configuration you will find settings that shape the sound system more broadly:
- Number of Streaming Sound Channels — how many channels are held back for streaming audio such as music, biome ambience, and records.
- Sound Culling Interval — the number of ticks between culled sound events, with 0 turning culling off.
- A separate toggle controls whether sounds a player cannot hear are cancelled. It does not cover global, non-attenuated, or weather sounds.
Music Manager Options
Replace Music Manager swaps the game's music handling for the mod's version, which also makes the music manager commands available. Reduce music wait time shortens the gap between music plays; it is expressed as a percentage and works independently of the modded manager.
Practical Notes
Several settings display a restart or reload notice when changed — CLIENT restart required, WORLD restart required, or ASSET reload required. Watch for these markers so you know whether a change takes effect immediately. If you are tuning for performance, start with Reverb Ray Projections, then consider Occlusion Processing and the worker thread count.
