Toggling Smooth Lighting and Ambient Occlusion per Block Type in Enhanced Block Entities

guide

Enhanced Block Entities separates its lighting options by block type, and each smooth lighting toggle only works when the matching enhanced model is active. This guide explains how the two layers relate and how to operate them.

How the Two Layers Work Together

The mod gives certain block types baked models for better performance and longer view distances. On top of that, each of those block types has its own lighting toggle that controls whether smooth lighting and ambient occlusion apply to it.

The important rule: a lighting toggle does nothing on its own. It depends on the enhanced model for the same block type being turned on first. If the model is off, the lighting option has nothing to act on.

The Paired Options

Each pair below follows the same pattern — the enhanced model must be enabled before the lighting option can take effect.

  • Enhanced Chests enables baked chest models. With it on, Smooth Chest Lighting lets chests receive smooth lighting and ambient occlusion.
  • Enhanced Signs enables baked sign models. With it on, Smooth Sign Lighting lets signs receive smooth lighting and ambient occlusion.
  • Enhanced Bells enables baked bell models. With it on, Smooth Bell Lighting lets bells receive smooth lighting and ambient occlusion.
  • Enhanced Beds enables baked bed models. With it on, Smooth Bed Lighting lets beds receive smooth lighting and ambient occlusion.
  • Enhanced Shulker Boxes enables baked shulker box models. With it on, Smooth Shulker Box Lighting lets shulker boxes receive smooth lighting and ambient occlusion.
  • Enhanced Decorated Pots enables baked decorated pot models. With it on, Smooth Decorated Pot Lighting lets decorated pots receive smooth lighting and ambient occlusion.

So if you want smooth lighting on a block type, turn on its enhanced model first, then turn on its lighting toggle.

Operating the Interface

Open the mod's settings screen and find the Block Entity Settings section, which holds the model and lighting options. Hover over any option to read its description.

When you enable an enhanced model, you also gain its other benefits: better performance in areas with many of those blocks, and the ability to see them from farther away. If a block type turns invisible because of another mod, turn its enhanced model off.

Some additional settings also require their matching enhanced model.

  • Sign Text Rendering controls how far sign text appears. Choices range from Smart, which adjusts the distance based on how many signs are rendering, through All, Most, Some, and Few, with Few being the lightest on performance. This requires Enhanced Signs.
  • The Christmas chest texture setting offers Allowed, Forced, and Disabled. It requires Enhanced Chests.
  • Experimental Chests and Experimental Signs add experimental rendering features such as specially generated particle textures that work with resource packs. Each requires its matching enhanced model.

Troubleshooting

If blocks are invisible while using resource packs, enable Force Resource Pack Compatibility. Do not combine it with resource packs built for this mod. If problems persist, report them.

Dump Example Resources writes the mod's default resources to a dump folder so resource pack makers can use them as a reference.

Quick Summary

Turn on the enhanced model for a block type, then turn on that block type's lighting toggle. Repeat per block type. Use the Block Entity Settings section, and hover over options for descriptions.
