Elytra Trims: Customizing Your Elytra

Elytra Trims lets you decorate the elytra with armor trims, dyes and banner patterns, so your wings match your look. This guide covers the customization options.

Armor trims on elytra

The mod lets you apply armor trims to an elytra just as you would to armor, using a smithing template, the elytra and a trim material at a smithing table. This brings the full palette of vanilla trim patterns and materials to your wings.

Dyeing and banners

Beyond trims, you can dye an elytra any color and apply banner patterns to it, letting you fly a custom design or emblem. The mod's smithing recipes combine a decoratable elytra with items — for example a Nether Star, a Glow Ink Sac, or a banner with paper — to apply these special decorations.

Using it

Because Elytra Trims is largely cosmetic, it fits any playstyle: take your elytra to a smithing table and add a trim, a color, or a banner pattern to personalize it. In multiplayer the mod must be installed on the server, though players without it can still join. It is a pure quality-of-life and cosmetic upgrade for anyone who spends a lot of time gliding.

The four smithing recipes

Everything this mod does to an elytra happens at a smithing table, and there are exactly four recipes. All of them take an elytra as the base and return an elytra — nothing is consumed except the addition:

• Glow Ink Sac applies the glow effect, making the decorated parts of the elytra luminous.
• Enchanted Golden Apple applies the animation effect.
• Nether Star applies the gateway effect.
• A banner in the template slot with Paper as the addition applies that banner's pattern to the wings.

The banner recipe is the odd one out and the one people get wrong: the banner goes in the template slot, not the addition slot, and the paper is what you spend.

Trims and dyes as well

Beyond those four, the elytra accepts the same armour trims and dyes that armour pieces do, which is where the mod takes its name. A trim applied to an elytra uses the same material colours as it would on a chestplate.

Client-side options worth knowing

Much of what you see is configurable rather than fixed. The settings cover whether banner textures or shield textures are used for patterns, whether trims are cropped to fit the wing shape, whether the darker trim colour is used, whether the elytra renders as a 3D item model like a shield or banner, and whether dye, cape, glow and pattern layers are shown at all.

If a decoration you applied is not appearing, the render settings are the first place to look — the data is on the item either way.
