Exploring Biomes in the Starlight Dimension

guide

The Starlight Dimension contains a variety of distinct biomes, each with unique climates and creatures.

Crystallized Desert

This biome features a hot climate with a temperature of 2.0. It does not experience rain. Monsters found here include the nightfall spider, lonestar skeleton, seeker, crystallized moth, gleech, and thirst walker.

Dark Swamp

The Dark Swamp has a temperate climate with a temperature of 0.5. Monsters that spawn in this biome are the nightfall spider, lonestar skeleton, and seeker. Creatures present include the ent, ratlin, shadow snail, and zombified ratlin.

Ether River

This biome is temperate, with a temperature of 0.5. Monsters encountered in the Ether River are the nightfall spider, lonestar skeleton, and seeker.

Glimmer Scrubland

The Glimmer Scrubland also has a temperate climate, with a temperature of 0.5. Monster spawns include the nightfall spider, lonestar skeleton, and seeker. Creatures found here are the ent, ratlin, and shadow snail.

Grim Shore

With a temperate climate and a temperature of 0.5, the Grim Shore is similar to other temperate biomes. Monsters include the nightfall spider, lonestar skeleton, and seeker. Creatures such as the ent, ratlin, and shadow snail also inhabit this biome.

Icy Sea

The Icy Sea is a snowy biome with a temperature of -0.3. Monsters found here are the nightfall spider, lonestar skeleton, and seeker. The rookfish is a water creature that spawns in the Icy Sea.

What the temperatures mean in practice

The numbers above are not decoration. A biome at 2.0 never rains, which rules out the water-filling tricks you might rely on elsewhere, while the biomes at -0.3 are snowy and freeze exposed water. Since the dimension's ores sit in specific stone types rather than at specific depths, the biome you land in largely decides what you can mine without travelling.

Ores by stone type

Four stones carry the mod's ores, and knowing which is which saves a lot of aimless digging:

  • Grimstone and Voidstone carry the widest spread — saltpeter, starcore, deepsilver and malarite all appear in both.
  • Eternal Ice and Haze Ice carry saltpeter and starcore, but they smelt slower: 300 ticks in a furnace against 200 for the grimstone and voidstone versions, and 150 against 100 in a blast furnace.
  • Nightfall Mud and its packed form carry deepsilver and malarite.

Starcore and Saltpeter Powder are the two you will want first, because the Alloy Furnace uses them as the flux in eight of its eleven recipes.

Meteor showers

The dimension occasionally runs a meteor shower at night. Large meteorites are genuinely dangerous to stand under, but their landing sites expose ores, and creteors may spawn around them afterwards — killable for their hide. It is the one weather event here worth going out into rather than sheltering from.
