Buffering Chat, F3, and HUD Overlays in Exordium
Exordium can cache several on-screen overlays instead of redrawing them every frame, which lowers the cost of drawing the interface. Each overlay is controlled separately, so you can buffer only the elements that matter to you.
How the Per-Overlay Options Work
Every supported overlay follows the same pattern of settings.
- An enable toggle turns buffering on or off for that specific overlay.
- A Max. FPS value sets the ceiling for how often that overlay is redrawn. A lower number means the overlay refreshes less often and costs less to draw.
- A Force Blend toggle switches texture blending on for that overlay. This can resolve conflicts caused by other mods.
- A Force Updates toggle makes the overlay refresh on every frame it is allowed to, while still respecting the framerate ceiling you set. This can also resolve conflicts caused by other mods.
The overlays that can be buffered this way are the chat, the F3 debug overlay, the health/hunger/armor display, the hotbar, the experience bar and level number, the scoreboard, the tablist, the vignette, the crosshair, bossbars, the XaerosMinimap overlay, and the Paperdoll overlay.
Chat and F3
Turning on buffering for the chat overlay caches the chat so it is not rebuilt constantly. The Buffer Chat Max. FPS option caps how frequently it refreshes. Force Chat Updates makes it refresh on every permitted frame, and the blend toggle applies texture blending to the chat, which may clear up problems introduced by other mods.
The F3 overlay has its own enable toggle, its own target framerate, its own blend toggle, and its own force-updates toggle. These are independent of the chat settings, so the two overlays can be tuned separately.
HUD Elements
The health, hunger, and armor display can be buffered on its own, with a maximum framerate, a blend toggle, and a force-updates toggle. The hotbar, the experience bar and level number, the scoreboard, and the tablist each have the same set of controls.
Bossbars are handled the same way, with an enable toggle, a maximum framerate, and a force-updates toggle.
Vignette, Crosshair, and Other Overlays
The vignette has an enable toggle, a maximum framerate, and a force-updates toggle. The crosshair has the same three controls; note that its maximum framerate applies while F3 mode is active, and enabling the buffered crosshair removes the inverted-color effect from the crosshair.
The XaerosMinimap overlay and the Paperdoll overlay each have an enable toggle and a target framerate.
The Global Update Rate
One setting controls how often the game looks for changes in interface elements. Setting it to match your monitor's refresh rate is recommended, since checking more often than your display can show rarely helps.
Practical Notes
If an overlay looks stale or fails to keep up with what is happening in the game, raising its maximum framerate or turning on its force-updates option usually helps. If an overlay renders incorrectly alongside another mod, try the blend toggle for that overlay first. Buffering an overlay you do not need can be turned off entirely with its enable toggle.
