Buffering the Crosshair and Third-Party Overlays in Exordium
Exordium lets you control how often individual interface elements redraw, which reduces the work your game does every frame. Instead of updating the crosshair, overlays, and HUD pieces at full speed, you give each one its own framerate cap. This guide covers the crosshair, third-party overlays such as XaerosMinimap and Paperdoll, and the global UI update rate.
How Buffering Works
Each element has its own Enable/Disable buffering toggle. When buffering is on, that element refreshes at the maximum framerate you set for it rather than every frame. Lower caps mean less drawing work; higher caps mean smoother motion.
Most elements also carry two extra toggles:
- Force updates makes the element refresh on every possible update frame while still respecting its framerate limit. This can resolve conflicts with other mods.
- Force blend turns on texture blending for that element. It may fix issues caused by other mods.
Both are optional and only worth enabling when something looks wrong.
The Crosshair
Buffering the crosshair uses a custom implementation. Turning it on removes the inverted color effect from the crosshair. You set a Buffer Crosshair Max. FPS value to cap how often it redraws; this cap applies during F3 mode. A Force Crosshair Updates toggle is available if the crosshair fails to keep up.
Third-Party Overlays
Two external overlays have their own buffering controls:
- XaerosMinimap — enable or disable buffering the overlay, and set its target framerate.
- Paperdoll — enable or disable buffering the overlay, and set its target framerate.
Each of these has a single target framerate rather than the extra force toggles found on the built-in elements.
The UI Update Rate
One setting controls how often the game scans UI elements for changes. The recommendation is to match it to your monitor's refresh rate. This value governs the checking rate across the interface, so it pairs with the per-element framerate caps described above.
Other Buffered Elements
The same pattern applies to the rest of the interface. Each of these has a buffering toggle, a maximum framerate, and force update and force blend options:
- Chat overlay
- F3 overlay
- Health, hunger, and armor overlay
- Hotbar
- Experience bar and level number
- Scoreboard
- Tablist
- Vignette, which uses a custom buffered implementation
- Bossbars, which use a fast buffering mode
Adjusting These Settings
Every option here is changed through the mod's interface rather than through crafting or items. Open the relevant screen and toggle buffering per element, then set each framerate cap to a value that suits your machine. If an element misbehaves after buffering is enabled, try its force update or force blend option before turning buffering off. To reach any of these controls directly, use the corresponding hotkey and set it in the controls menu if it is not already bound.
