Flashback Export Settings and Troubleshooting Guide
Exporting a video in Flashback starts from the main menu bar: open File and choose Export Video. Everything below covers the settings that shape the output, the render filters that decide what appears, and the messages you may run into when an export goes wrong.
Export Settings
The export window is where you control the file itself. A few options matter most:
- Filename — the export filename field uses variables you can combine: year-month-day, hh_mm_ss, the replay name, the name of the current active scene, and an export count for the session.
- Codecs and containers — the exporter lists the containers and codecs it can find. If nothing appears, you will see No supported containers found or No supported codecs found.
- Bitrate — enable Use Maximum Bitrate if you want the highest quality the encoder allows.
- Transparent Sky — tick this in the export window, but only after unticking Render Sky in the Visuals window. Both steps are required for a transparent sky.
- Hide During Export — entities can be hidden while exporting; you will see a message confirming how many are hidden or shown.
- GIF warning — GIF output can become extremely large. Consider WebP instead, which is similar but better.
Render Filters and Visuals
The Render Filter menu decides which entities are drawn. If you switch something off there and later wonder why an entity is missing from your render, that is the cause — the mod makes you affirm this before touching the menu.
- Hide All Spectators — spectators are hidden, and the game notes they are hidden because this option is enabled.
- Particles — the particle filter only stops new particles from spawning; particles already present are unaffected. If none match, you get No particles found.
- Beacon beams, fog colour, aspect ratio — Render Beacon Beams toggles beams, Override Fog Colour changes fog, and Change Aspect Ratio includes presets such as 2.40:1 (Widescreen).
- Rule of Thirds Guide — overlays a composition guide.
- No GUI — removes all UI, rendering only the world.
- SSAA — supersampling anti-aliasing renders at double resolution and downscales to remove jagged edges.
- Hide Text Below Name, Hide All Spectators, Unhide All Entities, and Hide During Export round out what gets drawn.
Export Troubleshooting
- Fullscreen — fullscreen causes issues when exporting. Disable it before you start.
- Write errors — if the file cannot be written to your chosen location, usually due to missing write permissions, the export is left in a temp folder instead.
- Mod conflicts — some mods are known to cause crashes or rendering issues during export; removing them is the suggested fix.
- Dummy Render Frames — this renders extra dummy frames before each saved frame. It drastically increases export time but may be needed with shaders that rely on temporal accumulation, or with mods lacking FREX Flawless Frames support.
- First-person exports — if you plan to export your own first-person view, raise First-person Updates to match your target framerate.
- Replay loading — replays can fail to open due to version, protocol, or registry mismatches. Registry mismatches can also occur if mods were added or removed, and a replay may still load but behave incorrectly.
- Recovery — if the game closed unexpectedly while recording, Flashback offers to recover unfinished recordings, though up to five minutes from the end may be lost.
- Combining replays — Combine With Other Replay merges replays, and failure produces Unable to combine replays.
Handy Habits
Set In and Out points on the timeline with the corresponding hotkeys (set them in the controls menu) to choose exactly which section is exported. Keyframes copy and paste with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, and right-clicking a keyframe lets you change its Type to alter interpolation. The left and right arrow keys move the playhead one tick; up and down jump between keyframes. To hide many entities at once, use the `/hide [entity]` command, and `/show [entity]` to bring them back.
