Configuring Flashback's Recording and Capture Options

guide

Flashback records your Minecraft gameplay so you can play it back and produce cinematic shots, and its capture settings let you control how much detail goes into each replay. This guide covers the recording toggles, first-person data, voice chat, Bobby chunks, and related options.

Automatic Recording

Two settings decide whether recordings begin and end on their own. Automatically Start kicks off a replay recording the moment you join a world or server. Automatically Finish wraps up the recording when you leave that world or server. Turn both on if you want every session captured without touching a button.

Show Recording Toasts displays a small notification in the top right corner whenever a recording starts or stops. There is also an option to save replays using default values rather than opening the Save Replay screen each time.

Mark Dimension Changes drops a marker onto the replay whenever you switch dimensions, which makes those transitions easy to find later.

First-Person Updates

First-Person Updates sets how many times per second the position and angle of the first-person player are refreshed. If you intend to export your own first-person perspective, raise this value to match the framerate you plan to export at. A related toggle disables the increased first-person updates if you do not want them.

Voice Chat and Bobby Chunks

Two options pull extra data into the replay. One adds voice chat from SimpleVoiceChat, so conversations are preserved alongside the footage. Record Bobby Chunks captures visible Bobby chunks directly into the replay.

Other Capture Options

Synchronize Ticking keeps the client and integrated server ticking in lockstep. It only works in singleplayer and is useful when recording below 20 TPS, though it may result in deadlocks.

Ignored Custom Payloads lets you list custom payloads from mods that should be ignored, primarily as a workaround for problematic mods.

Controls and Hotkeys

Flashback's keybinds live in the controls menu. Actions such as setting In and Out points on the timeline have their own keybinds — assign the corresponding hotkey in the controls menu rather than relying on a default.

While viewing a replay, right-click players or entities in the world to open a popup with useful functions. Scrolling the mouse wheel over the main view adjusts flight speed, and scrolling while hovering the timeline adjusts zoom; you can also drag the bar at the bottom of the timeline. Holding CTRL applies keyframes, and holding SHIFT snaps to them.

Exporting and Warnings

To export a video, open File in the main menu bar and choose Export Video. The export filename field supports variables for date, time, replay name, scene name, and session export count. Dummy Render Frames makes the exporter render extra frames before saving each one — this drastically increases export time but may be needed with shaders that rely on temporal accumulation or mods lacking FREX Flawless Frames support.

Flashback will warn you if mods are known to cause issues while recording, loading, or exporting replays, and it may ask you to remove them. It also flags incomplete recordings left behind when the game closes unexpectedly, offering to recover them, though up to five minutes from the end may be lost.

The Advanced options carry a blunt warning: leave them alone unless you understand them, and support requests after changing them will not be treated kindly.
