Fog Overrides Guide: Control Fog, Water, Lava, Sky, and Colors Per Location

guide

Fog Overrides lets you take direct control of the fog, water, lava, sky, and overlay visuals in Minecraft. Everything is handled through the mod's config screen and its keybinds rather than any crafting recipe. Open the config menu with the Open Config Keybinding (set your own key in the controls menu), and use the Toggle Fog Overrides hotkey to switch the whole mod on or off.

Calculation Types

The mod supports several ways to decide how far fog reaches:

  • Blocks = Hard fixes the fog distance to an exact number of blocks measured from the player.
  • Percent expresses the fog distance as a share of your render distance.
  • Percent/Blocks combines both: it uses a block amount measured against a percentage of the current render distance.

There is also a setting for whether fog should blend smoothly as it changes between states, and an Advanced F3 Information option that shows extra detail about the mod's data. Another setting controls how the mode fog renderer behaves.

Render Modes

The mod can run in different modes: one that removes fog entirely, one that applies your configured fog rendering, one that falls back to vanilla fog, and one that uses game-mode-specific overrides.

Spectator and Creative Overrides

Both spectator mode and creative mode have their own override toggles. For each, you can set a near distance (where fog begins) and a far distance (where it becomes fully opaque). Separate near and far values exist for normal fog, water fog, and lava fog in each of these modes.

Per-Location Fog Settings

For a given location you can decide whether the mod overrides fog there, whether fog is enabled there at all, and the near and far distances measured in blocks from the camera. The near value must always be smaller than the far value.

Water fog and lava fog each have their own enable toggles. Turning either off disables that fog type completely and stops any distance settings for it from applying.

Potion Effect Fog

Water fog can be adjusted while a water breathing potion is active, with its own near and far distances. Lava fog can likewise be adjusted while a fire resistance potion is active, also with separate near and far distances.

Colors

You can override the sky color, fog color, water color, and water fog color for a location. Each has an override toggle plus a color value.

Overlays and Clouds

The underwater overlay texture can be toggled on or off, as can the fire overlay shown when the player is burning. The fire overlay has a vertical offset setting, and a separate vertical offset applies while a fire resistance potion is active. You can also set the Y-level at which clouds render.

Server and Config Notes

Some settings may be overridden by the server. A server config command exists, but it does not work on an integrated server — use the config menu there instead. Some changes require reloading the world. When settings are pushed successfully, the mod reports that fog was updated for the player.
