Choosing a Fog Calculation Type and Setting Up Smooth Fog Transitions in Fog Overrides

guide

Fog Overrides gives you control over how far fog sits from the camera and how it changes as conditions shift. This guide covers the calculation type you pick for fog distance and the option that makes fog blend smoothly instead of snapping between values.

Understanding the Calculation Types

Open the Fog Overrides config screen using the Open Config Keybinding (assign it in the controls menu). The Calculation Types section is where you decide how the mod interprets your distance values.

  • Blocks — This is the hard option. The fog distance is simply the number of blocks you set, measured from the player. Nothing else influences it.
  • Percent — Here the fog distance is expressed as a share of your current render distance rather than a fixed block count.
  • Percent/Blocks — This combines both ideas. The fog distance is a set number of blocks away from the player, but it is derived using a percentage of whatever render distance is currently active.

Pick the type that matches how you think about fog. If you want consistent spacing regardless of render distance, Blocks is the straightforward choice. If you want fog to scale along with your view distance, Percent or Percent/Blocks will behave more predictably as you change that setting.

Smooth Fog Transitions

There is a setting that controls whether fog eases between states rather than jumping instantly. Enable it if you want gradual changes; leave it off if you prefer fog to switch immediately. This is a simple on-or-off choice.

Advanced F3 Information makes the mod show detailed data about what it is doing, which is useful while tuning values. A separate setting governs how the mode fog renderer behaves, and the mod can also be toggled active or inactive entirely via its keybind.

Per-Location and Per-Mode Overrides

Beyond the main calculation type, fog can be overridden in specific locations and in specific game modes. Each location has its own switches for enabling fog, choosing near and far distances, and optionally overriding sky color, fog color, water fog, water color, water fog color, lava fog, and their associated colors.

Water and lava fog each have their own enable switches. Note that turning off water fog disables it completely and stops every other water distance value from applying. The same applies to lava fog. Water Breathing and Fire Resistance potion effects can each adjust their respective fog distances when active.

Spectator and Creative modes have their own override toggles plus near and far distances for normal, underwater, and under-lava situations.

Distance Rules

For any fog distance pair, the near value must be smaller than the far value. The near distance is where fog begins appearing; the far distance is where it becomes fully opaque.

Some settings require reloading the world before they take effect. Keep that in mind if a change does not appear right away.
