Configuring FPS Reducer's Idle, Background, and Menu FPS Limits

guide

FPS Reducer lowers your frame rate and quiets audio when you are not actively playing, and its settings let you decide exactly when and how much that happens. Everything is handled through the mod's configuration screens and a few hotkeys, not through crafting or items.

Opening the Configuration

The main settings live in the FPS Reducer Configuration screen, with extra controls in FPS Reducer Advanced Options. Use these screens to set timings, frame caps, and which situations trigger a reduction.

Timing and Frame Rate Limits

Four values control the core behaviour:

  • Waiting Time (min:sec) — how long the client waits with no input before it enters the idle state. Slide the control fully to the right to disable the idle state entirely.
  • Max FPS at idle state — the ceiling your frame rate drops to once that idle period has elapsed.
  • Max FPS during no operation — applied the moment the mod notices you have stopped doing anything, without waiting for the idle timer.
  • Max FPS in GUI screens — the cap used while screens such as your inventory or the menu screens are open.

Situational Toggles

These switches decide which situations count as inactive:

  • Reduce FPS when inactive — lowers the frame rate while the game window is not in the foreground.
  • Reduce FPS in Game Menu — lowers the frame rate while the game menu is showing.
  • Suppress sound when inactive — mutes audio while the game window is not in the foreground.
  • Ignore mouse button holding — keeps the mod from treating a held mouse button as ongoing activity.

Manual Reduction

Reduce FPS manually lets you force the idle state yourself instead of waiting for the timer. Trigger it with the corresponding hotkey, which you assign in the controls menu.

Choosing a Profile

Profiles bundle several of these behaviours together:

  • Modest Eco — the default. The frame rate is reduced when the client is in the background or showing the ESC menu.
  • Eco — close to the original FPS Reducer default. Reduction applies in the background, in the ESC menu, and after ten minutes without any operation.
  • Situational Cooling (Low) — for machines already running at 60 fps or better. On top of the Eco behaviour, the frame rate is capped at 60 fps while your character stands still, while the inventory screen is open, or in any GUI screen. Your VSync and Max Framerate settings can weaken the effect.
  • Situational Cooling (High) — for weaker machines, and more aggressive. On top of the Eco behaviour, the cap becomes 30 fps in those same situations: standing still, inventory screen, or any GUI screen.

Positioning the FPS Counter

The counter's placement is set on a screen showing eight check boxes along the edges. Pick one of those boxes as your reference point, then drag the box that marks where the counter should sit. If dragging is awkward, the arrow keys or the WASD keys move the box as well.
