Freecam Mod Usage Guide: Enabling, Key Bindings, and Notifications

guide

Freecam is a camera utility that detaches your view from your character, letting you fly around and look at the scene from a different position. This guide covers how to turn it on and off, how its controls are organized, and what the on-screen messages tell you.

Turning Freecam On and Off

Activating freecam switches your perspective away from your player and places a separate camera you can move freely. Deactivating it returns your view to your character. The mod confirms each transition with an on-screen message: one states that freecam has been enabled, and the other states that it has been disabled. These notices appear by default, but you can control them (see the notifications section below).

If freecam will not activate, the mod may report that freecam is restricted on the current server. That message means the server you are connected to does not permit the feature, so the toggle will not work there.

Key Bindings

Freecam's controls are handled through key bindings rather than any in-game crafting or item. The mod exposes a set of bindings you assign yourself, including one for toggling freecam, one for tripod cameras, and others for camera movement. Because no specific keys are fixed by the mod, open the controls menu and assign the corresponding hotkey to each action you want to use. Set the freecam toggle to whatever key is comfortable, and do the same for the tripod toggle and any movement bindings you plan to rely on.

How the Camera Moves

Movement behavior is configurable. You can choose the style of flight the camera uses, and you can tune how fast it travels horizontally and how fast it travels vertically. Separate speed settings for the horizontal and vertical axes let you make one direction faster or slower than the other. There is also a setting for which blocks the camera may pass through while flying.

Passing Through Blocks

Several options control what the camera can travel through:

  • Ignore Transparent Blocks lets the camera move through transparent blocks.
  • Ignore Openable Blocks lets it pass through doors, trapdoors, and gates.
  • Custom Ignore List lets you name specific blocks the camera may pass through. Entries use a block id such as "grass_block", and if you leave off the namespace, "minecraft:" is assumed. This option can only be used in singleplayer, in creative, or while you have operator status.
  • Ignore Regular Expressions lets you match blocks using regular expression syntax, tested against the full block id (for example, "minecraft:grass_block").
  • Ignore All Collision lets the camera pass through every block. This setting takes priority over the options listed above.

Always Check Initial Collision decides whether the starting perspective checks for collision even when Ignore All Collision is switched on.

Appearance and Interaction

You can adjust how freecam looks. Options cover the initial perspective of the camera, whether your player is shown at its original position, whether your hand is visible, and whether brightness is increased while freecam is active. Show Submersion Fog controls whether a fog overlay appears when the camera is underwater, in lava, or in powdered snow.

Interaction settings determine whether you can use blocks and entities while in freecam, and which source those interactions come from. One option prevents your player from moving while freecam is active; multiplayer use of that setting is not advised.

Multiplayer Options

The Multiplayer Options section holds settings for servers, including whether freecam is allowed or disallowed on particular servers using a whitelist or blacklist.

Notifications

Notification settings let you show or hide the mod's messages. Freecam Notifications controls the alerts you receive when entering or exiting freecam. Tripod Notifications does the same for entering and exiting tripod cameras. If you would rather not see these messages, turn the relevant notification option off.
