FTB Chunks First-Time Setup: Map, Minimap, and Claim Manager Basics

guide

FTB Chunks is a map and land-claiming utility that you operate entirely through its interface and hotkeys. This guide covers what to open first, how the map and minimap behave, and how to claim land.

Opening the Main Screens

The mod's central hub is the FTB Chunks: Claim Manager. Use the Open Claim Manager action to reach it; if no key is assigned yet, bind one in the controls menu. A separate Quick Add Waypoint action also exists for dropping a waypoint without opening a full screen.

The large map has its own screen, and from it you can jump to two others: a chunk claim screen and a settings screen. A server settings screen is also reachable from there, though it requires operator status. The map screen itself displays a Key/Mouse Reference panel, so you can always look up controls while it is open.

Map and Minimap Controls

Inside the map view, the mouse does most of the work. Dragging with the left button pans the view, the right button opens a context menu, and rotating the wheel zooms. For the keyboard, the spacebar recenters the view on your character, the chunk claim screen has its own key, and there is a key for teleporting to a point (operators only) plus one for the settings screen. Holding a modifier with the settings key opens server settings. A function-key combination toggles the chunk grid.

The minimap has its own set of options. Minimap Pointer Icon Mode changes the pointer style, and there is a large variant of that icon mode. Show Text above minimap controls the info strip, whose contents and ordering are configurable under Minimap Info Settings. Proportional sizing makes the minimap scale with screen width when on; when off it stays a fixed size. Show player when not locked north keeps your position visible even when the map isn't oriented north. Servers can turn the minimap off entirely for clients.

Reading the Map

Claimed land can be drawn on the map, and you can narrow this to only your own claims. A Show only Claimed Chunks view exists for a stripped-down display. Zooming out is capped by default because of memory limits; the Constrain map zoom-out option controls this, and turning it off removes the restriction. A reduced color palette option is available for lower-detail rendering.

Claiming Chunks

Claiming happens directly on the map with drag gestures. Dragging with the left button claims the area you sweep; dragging with the right button releases it. For force-loading, hold the sprint modifier while dragging left to load an area, or while dragging right to unload it. Rotating the wheel over a force-loaded chunk adjusts when that force-loading expires. Holding the tab key hides the chunk grid, and holding the alt key reveals exact claim and force-load timestamps.

A Rectangular Claiming mode is available, and a chunk-claiming reference panel summarizes these gestures. Claim mode toggles claiming behavior. If a chunk belongs to someone else, the map tells you who holds it, and attempts to claim it report the reason: already claimed, forbidden in that dimension, or your chunk limit being reached.

Waypoints and Deathpoints

Waypoints can appear in the world as beacons or dots, with separate fade distances for each style. Max waypoint draw distance caps how far out they render, while focused waypoints grow according to a focus scale. How near your crosshair must be for a name to appear is controlled by a proximity setting. Death waypoints can be created automatically when you die, and a distance setting removes the nearest one once you get close enough. You can also clear all death waypoints at once.

Server Notes

If the mod is missing on the server side, a message warns that FTB Chunks requires it there. Server operators get extra tools: an admin mode that lets them modify any chunk regardless of ownership, and a protection bypass toggle.
