FTB Chunks Map and Minimap Display Options Explained

guide

FTB Chunks gives you a configurable map and minimap, and this guide covers the display settings that affect zoom, memory use, player tracking, entity icons, and location visibility.

Zoom and Memory Use

The map cannot zoom out endlessly. A max zoom constraint setting limits how far you can pull back, based on how many regions you have explored and how much memory is free. If that restriction feels too tight, you can turn the constraint off and zoom out further at your own risk.

Memory is managed through region data. The idle region release timeout controls how many seconds pass before data for a 512x512 region that has not been touched recently is dropped. Lower numbers free memory sooner but mean more trips to disk when those regions are needed again; setting it to zero turns releasing off entirely. A separate autorelease on map close option releases region data down to a chosen amount whenever you shut the large map, with the same trade-off between memory and disk access.

The minimap can also be sized in two ways. With proportional sizing on, its dimensions scale relative to the screen width, adjusted by the Scale setting. With it off, the minimap keeps one fixed size no matter your resolution.

Operating the Map

The large map is driven by mouse and keyboard actions. Dragging with the left button moves the view. The right button opens a context menu. Rotating the mouse wheel zooms. Pressing the space bar recenters on your player, and the chunk claim screen and settings screen each have their own key. A key reference panel is available on the map itself. Holding Alt shows absolute claim and force-load times, and holding Tab hides the chunk grid.

Player Tracking and Location Visibility

The location mode setting decides who can see you on the map or minimap beyond normal tracking range, and a related setting controls who can see your claims. Server operators can override team settings so that everyone is visible to everyone, and a long-range tracker interval governs how often tracking updates are sent; setting that interval to zero disables long-range tracking altogether.

On the minimap, a show player when unlocked north option keeps your player marker visible even when the map is not locked to north.

Entity Icons

Entity icon behavior is handled through Entity Icon Settings and Entity Icon Visibility. You can toggle icons on or off and see counts of how many are enabled versus disabled. An only surface entities option restricts icons to entities above ground.

Waypoints and Deathpoints

Waypoints can appear in the world when in world waypoints is enabled. Several distances shape how they render: the maximum draw distance, the fade distance for beacons, the fade distance for dots, and a focus distance that determines how close your crosshair must be before a waypoint's name appears. Focused waypoints also have their own scale setting for how large they grow.

Death waypoints can be created automatically when you die, and a death waypoint autoremove distance clears the nearest one once you come within that range. There is also a command to clear all death waypoints at once.

Waypoint sharing is controlled by separate permissions for party members, the wider server, and individual players. When someone shares one with you, a message confirms it and you can click to add it.
