Dynamic Gamma and Night Vision by Light Level in Gamma Utils

guide

Gamma Utils is a brightness mod that helps you see in the dark. Its configuration screen is called Gamma Utils Config. This guide covers the dynamic brightness features that react to the light around you, the per-dimension preferences, the limit checks, and the sky brightness override.

Dynamic Gamma

Enable Dynamic Gamma makes your gamma strength change on its own based on how much light is near you. Instead of one fixed brightness, the mod slides between two values as conditions change.

  • Minimum Gamma Strength is the gamma used where light is at its brightest (light level 15).
  • Maximum Gamma Strength is the gamma used in full darkness (light level 0).
  • The dynamic transition speed setting controls how quickly the value moves, measured in percent per second, whenever the surrounding light changes.
  • Averaging Light Level Range sets how many blocks around you are sampled when working out the average light level.

While Dynamic Gamma is running, some other features are unavailable. The mod will tell you that a feature does not work with Dynamic Gamma enabled.

Dynamic Night Vision

Enable Dynamic Night Vision does the same thing for night vision: the strength rises and falls according to the light around the player.

  • Minimum Night Vision Strength applies at light level 15.
  • Maximum Night Vision Strength applies at light level 0.
  • Its own transition speed setting governs how fast the change happens.
  • The same averaging range setting is used to sample light levels nearby.

As with gamma, certain features are blocked while Dynamic Night Vision is active, and the mod reports that the feature does not work with Dynamic Night Vision enabled.

Sky Brightness Override

Sky Brightness Override lets you keep dynamic brightness lower when you are standing under open sky. The mod compares this setting against the real sky brightness and uses whichever is greater. For reference, the actual sky brightness value is 20 at midnight and 100 at noon. Raising the override therefore allows a weaker dynamic gamma or dynamic night vision while you are under skylight.

Dimension Preference

Enable Dimension Preference automatically applies a brightness you choose whenever you move between dimensions. There are separate preferred strengths for the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. You can set these independently for gamma and for night vision.

Limit Checks

The mod can enforce boundaries on how far gamma or night vision is allowed to go.

  • Minimum Gamma Limit and Maximum Gamma Limit define the allowed gamma range when the limit check is on. There is a warning that disabling the limit check may cause problems with Sodium, and that Sodium users should restart after changing either limit.
  • Minimum Night Vision Limit and Maximum Night Vision Limit do the same for night vision.

Manual Controls and Feedback

Beyond the dynamic behaviour, you can toggle night vision, increase it, and decrease it using the corresponding hotkeys (set them in the controls menu). The same applies to gamma toggling and stepping. Gamma Percentage Step and Night Vision Percentage Step decide how much each increase or decrease moves the value.

Several settings shape the feedback you get:

  • Show Status Effect displays a status effect when gamma sits outside the normal range: "High Gamma" above 100 and "Low Gamma" below 0. Night vision has an equivalent option that shows the HUD and inventory icon like a regular status effect.
  • Enable Smooth Transition makes toggling gamma gentler, with a speed setting in percent per second. Night vision has its own smooth transition option.
  • Update Toggle Value makes the toggle remember the last non-default value you used. Night vision has a matching option that remembers the last non-zero value.
  • A message option shows the new gamma percentage whenever it changes, and another shows the new night vision percentage.

Reset-on-exit options return gamma to its default when Minecraft closes, and disable night vision when Minecraft closes. Brighten Fog Color makes night vision lighten fog the way vanilla night vision does.

Finally, Namespaced commands adds a namespace to all Gamma Utils commands, which helps avoid clashes with other mods or server commands.
