Configuring Gamma Utils: Gamma Levels, Toggles, Steps, Status Effects, and Smooth Transitions

guide

Gamma Utils is a brightness and Night Vision utility mod that helps you see in the dark. All of its behaviour is controlled from its config screen, Gamma Utils Config, and through hotkeys you assign yourself. Nothing is crafted; you adjust values and press keys.

Gamma Values and Toggling

Two separate brightness percentages drive the mod. Default Gamma Percentage is the value used while Gamma is switched off. Toggled Gamma Percentage is the value used while Gamma is switched on. Switching Gamma on and off is done with the toggle action bound to the corresponding hotkey (set it in the controls menu).

Update Toggle Value changes how the toggled value behaves. When it is on, the toggled percentage keeps whatever non-default figure you last used instead of reverting.

Steps

Gamma Percentage Step sets how much the percentage moves each time you raise or lower it. The raise and lower actions are bound to their own hotkeys (set them in the controls menu).

Status Effects

Show Status Effect displays an effect indicator whenever your Gamma percentage sits outside the normal band. Above 100 it reads as "High Gamma"; below 0 it reads as "Low Gamma".

Smooth Transitions

Enable Smooth Transition softens the change when Gamma is toggled. A separate speed setting controls how fast that blend runs, measured as a percentage per second. Note that smooth transition does not function while Dynamic Gamma is active.

Dynamic Gamma

Enable Dynamic Gamma lets brightness follow the light around you instead of staying fixed. Minimum Gamma Strength is the strength applied at light level 15, and Maximum Gamma Strength is the strength applied at light level 0. A transition speed setting governs how quickly the value shifts when light changes. Averaging Light Level Range sets how many blocks around you are sampled when working out the light level.

Sky Brightness Override raises the assumed sky brightness, which allows a lower dynamic value while you are under open sky. The mod takes whichever is greater: your override or the real sky brightness, which runs from 20 at midnight to 100 at noon.

Dimension Preference

Enable Dimension Preference makes Gamma jump to a chosen strength whenever you change dimension. Separate preferences exist for the Overworld, the Nether, and the End.

Limits and Messages

A limit check can enforce a floor and ceiling on Gamma. Minimum Gamma Limit and Maximum Gamma Limit define that range. Turning the limit check off may cause trouble with Sodium, and if you use Sodium you should restart after changing either limit. A message setting shows the new Gamma percentage whenever it changes.

Night Vision

Night Vision has its own parallel set of controls. Toggled Night Vision Percentage is the strength used while Night Vision is on, and a remember option keeps your last non-zero value rather than resetting it. Night Vision Percentage Step sets how far each raise or lower moves the value. Brighten Fog Color makes Night Vision lighten fog the way vanilla Night Vision does. Another option shows the Night Vision HUD and inventory icon as a normal status effect would appear.

Night Vision also has smooth transition, dynamic adjustment with minimum and maximum strengths, a sky brightness override, dimension preferences, limit checks, and change messages — each mirroring the Gamma equivalents. Dynamic Night Vision and Night Vision smooth transition do not work together.

Commands and Reset Behaviour

Namespaced commands adds a prefix to every Gamma Utils command, which avoids clashes with other mods or server commands. Options also exist to return Gamma to its default when the game closes, and to turn Night Vision off when the game closes.

Practical Order

  1. Set your default and toggled percentages.
  2. Choose a step size for raising and lowering.
  3. Decide whether the toggle value should remember your last used figure.
  4. Bind the toggle, increase, and decrease actions in the controls menu.
  5. Turn on status effects and smooth transition if you want them.
  6. Configure Dynamic Gamma or Dynamic Night Vision only if you want light-reactive brightness, and remember they conflict with smooth transition.
  7. Set dimension preferences and limits last, then restart if you use Sodium and changed a limit.
