Abyss Spell Focuses and Summons in Goety Cataclysm

guide

The abyss spell focuses of Goety Cataclysm channel the power of the deep for both attack and command. Each one draws on abilities associated with the Deepling Warlock or the Leviathan, and several of them behave differently when cast through the Abyss Staff. This guide covers what each focus does and which summons fall under the Sunken line.

Offensive Abyss Focuses

The offensive focuses in this family all deal in raw abyssal energy, though each delivers it differently.

  • Abyssal Beam Focus — reproduces a Deepling Warlock's trick of opening a portal and releasing beams of abyssal energy through it.
  • Abyssal Orb Focus — releases orbs of abyssal energy that hunt down nearby targets on their own. If you cast the spell while looking at a valid entity, the orbs home in on that entity instead. On contact they burst, inflicting Abyssal Fear.
  • Abyssal Mine Focus — places ethereal purple mines. Unlike the acid clouds left by their natural counterparts, these mines appear in greater numbers, and anything caught in the blast receives Abyssal Fear.
  • Water Spear Focus — fires a spear made of high-pressure water that ricochets off surfaces it strikes.

Two of these focuses scale up when channeled through the Abyss Staff:

Summoning Focuses

The Sunken focuses call Deepling creatures to fight for you, and both of them respond to the Abyss Staff by bringing in larger groups.

Sunken Swell Focus lets you call up the Leviathan's servants as your own, an authority you gain by defeating her. When the spell resolves, there is a 25% chance that the creature summoned is a Deepling Angler rather than an ordinary Deepling.

Sunken Current Focus is the upgraded version of the summoning focus. Instead of the humble Deepling, it brings forth Deepling Brutes — a stronger and more capable form of the same creature.

Casting Through the Abyss Staff

The Abyss Staff changes the outcome of every focus listed here that has an alternate casting mode. For the summoning focuses, the effect is a larger group arriving at once:

For the offensive focuses, the staff increases the volume of projectiles rather than changing what they do: more abyssal orbs from the Abyssal Orb Focus, more purple mines from the Abyssal Mine Focus, and a second water spear from the Water Spear Focus. The Abyssal Beam Focus has no listed staff variant, so its behavior stays as described above.

Choosing Between Them

Which focus suits you depends on whether you want damage or bodies on the field. The Abyssal Orb Focus and Abyssal Mine Focus both apply Abyssal Fear to whatever they hit, making them useful for weakening enemies before a fight closes in. The Water Spear Focus trades that effect for a projectile that keeps going after it bounces. The Abyssal Beam Focus simply delivers abyssal energy through a portal, mimicking the Warlock it comes from.

On the summoning side, Sunken Swell Focus gives you numbers with a chance of an Angler in the mix, while Sunken Current Focus trades quantity for quality by producing Brutes. Pairing either with the Abyss Staff is the straightforward way to field a larger force from one cast.
