Hardcore Revival Guide: Knockouts, Rescue, and Accepting Fate
Hardcore Revival replaces instant death with a knockout state, giving other players a chance to bring you back before your time runs out. When you go down, you do not die right away. Instead, you enter a waiting period. During this period you can be saved by someone nearby, or you can choose to give up and die immediately. The mod is operated entirely through its interface and hotkeys rather than through crafting anything.
What Happens When You Are Knocked Out
Once you are knocked out, a countdown begins. The screen shows rescue time left, expressed as the number of seconds remaining before you can no longer be saved. Alongside it, the message wait for rescue tells you your two options: hold on until someone reaches you, or end it yourself.
If nobody reaches you before the countdown finishes, the outcome is death. The message $s was not rescued in time appears to confirm that the window has closed.
Your On-Screen Controls While Down
Three controls are available to you in this state:
- die — labelled $s Accept your Fate $s. Selecting it ends your wait immediately and kills your character.
- Escape — press it to look around while you are down.
- rescue — hold this action to bring a knocked out player back. This is the control a rescuer uses, not the downed player.
When someone is in the process of saving you, the message You are being rescued... is displayed.
Accepting Fate
Accepting your fate is the voluntary exit from the knockout state. It is presented as the die option on screen. Server owners can remove this choice entirely by turning off allowAcceptingFate, which deletes the accept-fate button and leaves players with no option but to wait for the timer to expire.
Settings That Shape the Loop
These options determine how long the knockout lasts and what happens afterward.
- secondsUntilDeath — how many seconds a player can still be pulled back from death. Setting it to 0 turns the timer off.
- continueTimerWhileOffline — when enabled, the countdown keeps running even if the player disconnects.
- consecutiveKnockoutThresholdSeconds — the time window used to decide whether a new knockout counts as consecutive. It works together with the two settings below.
- resumeTimerOnConsecutiveKnockout — when enabled, a consecutive knockout picks up the countdown from where the previous one stopped.
- multiplyTimerOnConsecutiveKnockout — the factor applied to the remaining time on consecutive knockouts.
- rescueDistance — how close a player must be to perform a rescue.
- rescueActionTicks — how long the rescue action takes, measured in ticks, with 20 ticks equalling one second.
- rescueRespawnHealth — the health a rescued player returns with, out of 20.
- rescueRespawnFoodLevel — the maximum food level a rescued player returns with, out of 20.
- rescueRespawnFoodLevelDecrease — the food penalty applied to a rescued player, out of 20.
- rescueRespawnEffects — effects granted to a rescued player, written as "effect|duration|amplifier".
- instantDeathSources — damage sources that kill outright, skipping the knockout period.
- instantDeathEntityTypes — entity types that kill outright, skipping the knockout period.
Restrictions and Behaviour Toggles
Several settings control what a knocked out player may still do, and where the mod applies at all.
- Knocked out players are blocked from using commands, as stated by disabled when knocked out. Operators are exempt.
- allowUnarmedMelee — permits punching nearby enemies while down.
- allowAcceptingFate — controls whether the accept-fate option exists.
- disableInLonelyMultiplayer — turns the mod off when you are playing alone on a multiplayer server.
- disableInNonHardcore — restricts the mod to hardcore worlds only.
- disableInSingleplayer — turns the mod off in singleplayer.
Operating the Interface
Everything here is handled through the mod's own screens and the actions bound in your controls. To look around while knocked out, press Escape. To give up, choose the die option. To save someone else, hold the rescue action near them. If a key is not stated here, use the corresponding hotkey and set it in the controls menu.
