Hardcore Revival Guide: Knockout Limits, Instant Death, and Visibility Settings

guide

Hardcore Revival changes what happens when a player would normally die: instead of dying outright, the player is knocked out and given a chance to be saved. This guide covers what a knocked-out player can and cannot do, which damage sources skip the knockout period entirely, how world types affect whether the mod runs, and the options that control visibility and rescue behaviour.

What Knocked-Out Players Can Do

A knocked-out player is not completely helpless, but their options are limited. The wait for rescue prompt tells them they can either hold on until someone saves them or choose to give up. Pressing the die action, shown as Accept your Fate, ends the knockout immediately. If the allowAcceptingFate setting is turned off, that button disappears and the player has no choice but to let the timer run out.

While knocked out, a player can press Escape to look around. They can also hold the rescue input to save another knocked-out player who is within range.

Several settings decide what else remains possible. If allowUnarmedMelee is on, a knocked-out player can still punch nearby enemies. Separate options allow firing bows and firing pistols from Mr Crayfish's Gun Mod. If the relevant command setting is on, knocked-out players can still run commands, though OPs always retain that ability regardless. A similar setting allows knocked-out players to be teleported. When the command option is off, the message You cannot use commands while knocked out applies.

Rescue Mechanics

A rescue takes time. The rescueActionTicks setting defines how many ticks the action requires, with twenty ticks equal to one second. The rescueDistance setting, labelled Max Rescue Distance, defines how close a rescuer must be. While the action is underway, the rescuer sees You are being rescued..., and the victim sees rescue time left, counting down the seconds remaining.

The secondsUntilDeath setting, shown as Seconds until Death, controls how long a player can remain knocked out before dying. Setting it to zero turns the timer off. If continueTimerWhileOffline is enabled, logging out does not pause that countdown. When time runs out, the message $s was not rescued in time appears.

Consecutive knockouts can be handled differently. The consecutiveKnockoutThresholdSeconds setting defines how soon a later knockout counts as consecutive. With resumeTimerOnConsecutiveKnockout enabled, the timer picks up from where it last stopped. The multiplyTimerOnConsecutiveKnockout setting applies a multiplier to the remaining time in those cases.

After a successful rescue, rescueRespawnHealth sets how much health the player returns with, out of twenty. rescueRespawnFoodLevel sets the maximum food level, and rescueRespawnFoodLevelDecrease applies a penalty to it. rescueRespawnEffects lists effects given on rescue, written as effect, duration, and amplifier separated by vertical bars.

Instant Death Sources

Not every cause of death leads to a knockout. The instantDeathSources setting lists damage sources that kill immediately, with no knockout period. The instantDeathEntityTypes setting does the same for source entity types. Anything listed in either place bypasses the rescue system entirely.

Visibility and World Type Options

A visibility option makes knocked-out players glow, so they can be seen through blocks. This helps rescuers locate someone who has gone down.

Whether the mod applies at all depends on the world. disableInSingleplayer stops it from running in singleplayer. disableInLonelyMultiplayer stops it when you are playing alone on a multiplayer server. disableInNonHardcore restricts it so it only functions in hardcore worlds.

Other Notes

The enderPearlsVanishOnKnockout setting causes ender pearls to disappear when their owner is knocked out. The multiple entry refers to knocked-out players as a group, which matters because more than one player can be down at once and each needs separate rescue.

All of these options are adjusted through the mod's interface rather than through crafting. Any action that has a hotkey can be bound in the controls menu.
